Adam Wainwright will begin the season on the injured list with a groin strain.
Cardinals manager manager Oli Marmol said the 41-year-old right-hander is likely to miss several weeks. Wainwright just pitched four innings in a win over Cuba in the World Baseball Classic semifinals on Sunday, but the injury apparently happened during a workout in the weight room on Monday. He's shown diminished velocity throughout the spring, so giving him some extra time to build up his arm strength might not be the worst thing in the world, but it does put the Cards in a bind for now. Jake Woodford now figures to begin the year with a rotation spot.
It's almost like giving $17 mil to a 40+ year old who couldn't throw by the end of last season, then not signing any other pitcher at all in the offseason, was not the best strategy!
Wilking Rodriguez is also going to start the year on the IL, with a shoulder injury. I'm sorry, GRB. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault.
Glad we didn't waste that money getting Quintana or Wacha. Who could have forseen our rock solid and consistenly healthy rotation having someone go on the IL early on?
