Just when you haters thought the Cardinals would do nothing!
Former Detroit Tigers outfielder Ryan Vilade has signed a minor-league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team announced Tuesday.

Vilade, 25, spent most of the 2024 season at Triple-A Toledo but had three stints with the big league club. He went 8-for-45 (.178) with a home run in 17 games.

On the bright side, here's a nice write-up about a non-profit foundation his father started, and in which Vilade plays an active role: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/530289 ... oundation/

Kinda a shower thought here, but my belief is that the Dewitts looked at the market, looked at the economics and demographics of St. Louis, and have decided going forward that they are the Pirates/Royals/Reds/Brewers.

Maybe because the lifetime head of baseball operations spent all their money on mediocre pitchers.

I've always thought of the Cardinals as the MLB version of the Green Bay Packers. Obviously the ownership situations and salary cap situations are different, but I think the expectations of the organization transcend the local market based on history of winning, wide reaching fanbase (KMOX and lots of STL natives tend to move), and passionate fans.

The Dewitts have ample money to afford Gibson, Lynn, and Mikolas etc. They don't have any Gerritt Cole contracts. Even Gray is reasonable.

Just trying to build some suspense so that at least one team besides the Dodgers make an offer.

I could see Seattle going after him though.

My take on that announcement is that you've got to start a bidding war before you can get the highest possible bid.

Someone should send the agent a showreel of Jim "The Cat" Hayes' finest interviews.
