He seemed so disinterested this season I think he lost a lot of the shine he had

Yeah, I feel like trading Nolan Arenado would make fans more upset because of what it symbolizes. It's how Mets fans felt last year when they traded Verlander and Scherzer. It feels like a punting of the season, even if it's not.Popeye_Card wrote: ↑October 4 24, 8:49 amI don’t think fans would be very happy with an Arenado trade, even though it would probably be best for the organization if they were able to find a willing trade partner. The return would of course be underwhelming for trading away a future HoF fan favorite.ghostrunner wrote: ↑October 4 24, 8:13 amYeah, and I don't think most would be that upset. Contreras might be the closest to a fan favorite people would hate to lose. If I had to guess.Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑October 4 24, 7:34 amExcept we don't have a Betts or anyone close lol.ghostrunner wrote: ↑October 4 24, 6:23 amFrom what I understand trading Betts and shedding payroll was an ownership decision. Which could happen again in our case, though it'll at least nominally be Mo's job.

the cardinals shedding payroll is such a weird concept for me. like what do you plan on doing with all that powder? Theyve made it abundantly clear they will never be players for the Soto's of the world, regardless of how many instagram stories Nootbaar posts.
trading arenado would 90% just be doing him a solid. and then who plays 3rd? he's not blocking anyone at the minor league level.

This team, with a rotation of Mikolas/Matz/McGreevy/Pallante/?. Will it be the first Cardinals team to lose 100 games? Tune in next season to find out!WAR God wrote: ↑October 4 24, 12:05 pmC: Herrera/TBDgo birds wrote: ↑October 4 24, 11:55 amthe cardinals shedding payroll is such a weird concept for me. like what do you plan on doing with all that powder? I would welcome an Arenado trade. I don't think he's going to be happy or succeed during a rebuild. I'd rather let Walker or Gorman have an everyday shot at playing at their natural positions.
If they are going to shed payroll and go with that model, they can't continue to repeat Mikolas and Matz deals. Hopefully they can shed them too. I'd rather just see what the kids can do.

We’ve seen what the kids can do. They comprise most of the position player roster.

I'm pretty bad at identifying sarcasm, but...this is sarcasm, right?WAR God wrote: ↑October 4 24, 12:05 pmC: Herrera/TBDgo birds wrote: ↑October 4 24, 11:55 amthe cardinals shedding payroll is such a weird concept for me. like what do you plan on doing with all that powder? I wish it were sarcasm. I anticipate payroll being between 100-110m
Goldy is gone. Arenado will be traded. They will eat part of the contract. I tend to think they will keep Contreras. But that’s 55/45. He could be gone.
There are no significant hitting prospects in the minors to slot in.
They need to commit to Walker for the entire season too.

So much of the next couple of seasons hinge on how Walker develops. If he flops like this year, yeah the Cardinals are not going to be a very good team. If he flips the switch and hits that All Star level? Well now you can squint and see the makings of a decent lineup that you could bolster with a couple shrewd FA signings.
And who knows what transpires with the rotation.
