as a kid, I was always so mad when people would say that Ricky was better than Lou Brock.Im a Cardinals homer! I grew up, thinking Brock was an untouchable icon, the best leadoff man in baseball history, and no way Henderson could be better.

He was, of course.

Singular. Like Shohei in a way, I’d say. Sad day.

Hope more guys come along like this. But I wonder if the modern baseball mill and the popularity of other sports will prevent this. Kind of like AAU has had big ripples in the NBA. All the freaks come from Europe now.

I’m realizing I know the exploits and personality and I know nothing of his pre-baseball life. I’ll have to find a good biographical piece. I’ll see what Wikipedia links to.

Wikipedia wrote:Henderson was born on December 25, 1958, in Chicago in the back seat of an Oldsmobile on the way to the hospital. Henderson later joked, "I was already fast. I couldn't wait." He was named Rickey Nelson Henley, after singer-actor Ricky Nelson, and was the son of John L. Henley and Bobbie Henley.

Similar vein...on that speech when he set the all-time SB record, I thought, as an idealistic teenager, that it sounded pretty arrogant when he said the thing about Lou Brock was great but I'm the greatest of all time.

Now, I see that and nod vehemently, "[expletive] yeah, you are. [expletive] yeah, accept and appreciate your greatness." How rare of a gift.
