Martinez was largely overlooked last year despite striking out in fewer than 8% of his plate appearances at Class-A Quad Cities. Most players with that kind of contact rate are one-dimensional singles hitters, but Martinez drove 30 extra-base hits including eight home runs last year. The strong defensive infielder doesn't possess the raw power to become more than an average power threat in the upper minor leagues, and he will certainly have a hard time hitting many home runs at Palm Beach of the Florida State League this year. But his exceptional ability to make good contact could lead to some well-deserved attention in the near future.

He is off to a fine start at PB this year. He is hitting .381 with a 1.000OPS right now. Half of his 8 hits have been for extra bases, 3 doubles and a triple. He had an error the other night but he is supposed to be very good defensively.

And with very few 2b/ss prospects in the system he could move through rather quickly. You look at the next two levels and theres not much there.

At Springfield you have 2b Jarrett Hoffpauir and ss Tyler Greene. Hoffpauir is 24 and really hasnt done much since he left the midwest league and Greene who had such an up and down year last year. Greene has potential but hes gotta do somthing really soon.

At Memphis you have a legitimate prospect in Brendan Ryan at short but a roster filler at 2b in Edgar Gonzalez. If this kid is good the road is clear through the Cards system.
