Merritt Paulsen is a real piece of work.

After two major scandals he said he was stepping away. Neville spoke with two people: GM Ned Grabavoy and Paulson. There is no indication the female CEO hired to mop up (and made big promises to ‘watch what we do!’) was involved whatsoever. My guess is Neville charmed his petulant rich kid stareffer pants off. We also have an incredibly underwhelming kit sponsor now.

The Timbers per the press conference want to make the pushback a raving cancel culture thing. We shouldn’t ’race to outrage’ Grabavoy said. Neville made some stupid, fairly standard dumb jock misogynistic tweets. Most can look past them given his track record since. But if Phil’s baggage is a tiny little pin, the Timbers own baggage is a giant balloon full of [expletive] and the two can’t go together. Neville should get another chance if he talk some Paulson somewhere into it. Not here with the toxic boys club sexual and physical abuse disasters.

So goddam ignorant.

I won’t dismiss outright that Paulson did this in some part to stick it to the fans. I bet he thinks we’re all going to have to come back and lick his butt when this all comes off well. But Neville sucks. And if Neville and the kit sponsor are any indication, the talent adds are going to be underwhelming as well.

Hopefully he sells amid WC hype.

Hopefully he doesn’t get the Blazers too.

Neville's old guy meathead tweets are something that could be overlooked/forgiven if he had even a decent managerial resume, but he just doesn't. He's bad AND problematic. Not just in MLS, either. What happened when he left the England women's team? They started winning and making clear progress, ultimately making the WC final. Considering the market, the past controversies that Paulsen mishandled, and his own problematic reputation, it seems like he would rather damage the most passionate and loyal fanbase in the league and ruin his club's initially incredible culture just because he wants to push back on people calling him a rich, entitled [expletive]. It's reaching Dan Snyder levels of self-sabotage by way of monstrous ego. ESPECIALLY the thorns. If you're Sophia Smith and a big Euro club comes calling, this is just even more motivation to leave Portland.

The Timbers were a throw in when he bought the AAA Beavers. He’s just walking [expletive] head luck. I apologize to my children every day I was never CEO of Goldman Sachs. The lesson here is be the son of the CEO of Goldman Sachs.

Looks like the Thorns are FINALLY selling. I don’t think it would be wise to apply any benefit of the doubt as to why it took so long. Merritt was supposed to be entirely detached from that decision. But he’s supposed to be entirely detached from the Timbers moves too.

God if they don’t get to keep their place in Civic Stadium…

@thrill how much did you make last night? I’m pretty shocked the league didn’t let Miami do whatever the [expletive] they want wrt roster and cap. I thought they were going to be totally stacked—and wasn’t even mad about it. But I guess they’re actually going to open the gates for everyone.

We gave up our season tickets for the first time in MLS era. We’re going to focus on a few games with bigger groups in better seats. The way things are trending, packages and half-seasons will be available soon.

Neville, for his part, is saying the right things. He’s at least competent with a microphone in front of him. But I still have doubts about his character and he has to prove he doesn’t suck. It was pretty surprising how lame coaching hires were around the league last offseason. Portland set the bar though with incredible ignorance.

Merritt seems to be all the way back in with no explanation or announcement since he “stepped away” amid scandal.

Anyway, I like the Timbers though. So hopefully some actual soccer will help.

I did not renew my tix this year. 4x jump in price made it not worth my while to re-sell, and I got to all the games I wanted to last year as an "experience." Despite it being fun, I did not organically feel any pull to become an actual Inter Miami fan. I get to say I was there, so that's cool. I have a principled objection to that slapdash organization being the most expensive soccer ticket in the world. Just absolutely stupid. I can take a trip to Europe to see any club team in the world, stay at a 4 star hotel, and eat at nice restaurants for an entire week for the price of two season ticket to Inter.

I realize there's a lot of money in Miami, but can they get away with those prices when Messi is gone? People are dishing out big bucks for that Messi experience, the spectacle that is Messi. I get that Suarez, Busquets, Alba...They're part of the spectacle. But all these guys are wrapping it up.

Also, I can only cringe when I hear the term "joy" used in these broadcasts. "Gomez had joy breaking down the wing."

We should deport UK soccer announcers.

Messi is here to accomplish one long-term thing for Inter Miami specifically, which is get their stadium in actual Miami built. That's their big picture beyond what they can exploit in the short Messi window they have. They'll maximize that, and a healthy fan base will remain. It was pretty decent before, and there is a generation of kids being activated down here that is going to stick to some level. But they need the insane wheels of Miami/Dade politics to turn in their favor and Messi is helping them do that.

Quick follow up. Phil has no clue. I’m spoiled with coach incompetence between the Timbers and Blazers.

Don’t know a lot about it so I asked my friend Lola. Figured she’d know a lot about sports cause she’s a showgirl. But no, so I asked Tony who tends bar. He’s always there. Was interrupted by Rico who saw Lola dancing and Tony went after him and someone got shot.

So not sure
