Probably something to do with the NBA/MLB having a greater pool of talent than their corresponding international competitions. Inverse is definitely true about MLS vs WC but not sure if NHL/hockey is the same way.trill wrote:There seems to be some magic formula re: major sports and international competition. If it's too mainstream, if it's league gets huge TV ratings, the international competition doesn't get huge tv numbers (Olympic Basketball, WBC) but it's relatively small (hockey, soccer) it gets massive ratings for international competition?

Re: 2014 World Cup
This Brazilian team is NOTHING like the Brazilian teams of the past. The 2002 team had THREE WPOY's in Ronaldinho (who was an absolute joy to watch), Ronaldo and Rivaldo. No team has really impressed me in this World Cup. There had been NO transcendent team until Germany's beatdown of Brazil.
As far as ratings of the World Cup and the World Cup, I think it has to do with 1) the magnitude/prestige of the event 2) how much effort is done to just SIMPLY qualify to this party. WBC, Olympic basketball, cricket World Cup do NOT have the rigor of qualification that the World Cup does.
In addition, MLB and NBA are the best leagues in the world in their sports. The MLS is not even close to the best league in the world.
