Nothing but respect. Brilliant guy doing his thing without compromise, but Claypool has always just been a bit too Octopus’s Garden/Wild Honey Pie for me.

Plus, Otis.

i'm not going to vote in any that i made a list for but knew this likely wouldn't win. this board leans way too heavy on sad, depressing, lo-fi, slow, indie singer/songwriter stuff and so anything with a groove is not likely to do well...which technically applies to all my lists but i figured this list of claypool stuff would garner the least interest...but he's my favorite musician so i had to try.

technically the first song on my list has a whistling solo. ah well.

I REALLY tried Joce. Listened to every moment of your playlist. But just couldn't get into it.

Last year I only got a vote or two on a Blues battle including Gary Clark Jr, Stapleton, Black Pumas, Amy Winehouse, and The Black Keys on my list. There's not much pattern to the tourney results but it's fun to share some of your favorite artists and why.

I think Primus was probably the most musically unusual stuff I could hear on the radio as a kid. At least outside of late night programming.

There was goofy stuff like Presidents of the USA. And challenging or subversive stuff like Detachable Penis and Suicidal Tendencies. But musically and song structure wise, I don’t think there was anything as out there as Primus on the radio. There isn’t a chorus to be found.

I bet the live shows are super fun. But also too goddam loud in that bassy, hurts your bones and your head kind of way that earplugs don’t help a ton with.

And I just now grasped the cover of Tales From the Punchbowl.

I've only actually seen Primus twice (i honestly prefer the studio cut more than a live appearance, generally). Once in the early 2000s in KC (which wasn't the greatest show unfortunately) and then in August 2022 they were part of this South Park 25th anniversary show at Red Rocks. They did 2 shows and I got to go to the first one. The 2nd show had Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee show up as a surprise which would have been cool to see. I cant remember if I've mentioned the show here or not. anyways...i bring up because this

was arguably the best part. the show switched around from Primus, Ween and Trey/Matt stuff but when Primus played...holy sheet...i felt les' bass go thru me...and it was amazing...and I was at least half way up the seating.

here's the whole show if anybody has interest

Dude. The kids love Ween. Weirdest thing.

I went to see Big Thief last summer. Least relevant guy there. Saw five 20-something’s in a Ween shirt. One guy in the shirt also with a Ween calf tattoo. I was only slightly familiar with them. Remember the sexy album cover and that they were vaguely jam bandy. I expected to be the only guy with no septum piercing or tattoo, but a Ween shirt?

Later at one of the snob ice cream shops around town. I asked the young lady wearing a Ween tshirt ‘so you’re into Ween?’ I was too curious and hopefully not creepy. And she said she was because how can you deny the band that did the South Park theme. So Ween is bigger than Primus, even. Or maybe they’re actually just into the tshirts.

The young lady is wrong 'cause Primus wrote the South Park theme. Ween has collaborated with the South Park guys though. I'm a big Ween fan, er, I have maybe 4 or 5 of their records and enjoy them quite a bit. They certainly have their followers. I remember when I was messing around with this Canadian gal, she and her group of friends really loved Ween. Their performance at the South Park concert I think was considered a "big deal" 'cause I'm pretty sure they had been broken up/not speaking for quite a period of time, they've only "recently" gotten back as Ween. Even though it was the South Park 25th anniversary, I was there for Primus 1st and foremost, Ween 2nd and then the south park guys.

the sexy album is "chocolate and cheese" and its standard rock and roll i'd say, as with "quebec" and "white pepper". "12 golden country greats" is their spin on country and pretty good. "the mollusk" is definitely their most commercial album I'd say and it is good...though, i kinda rolled my eyes during the SP concert...Ween started playing the song "the mollusk" which is kinda hippy dippy/ethereal and this group of blonde bimbos next to me, who had crowded my space during primus and all, started like, dancing around me and being annoying as [expletive]..and i'm like "of course they like this song"...and i mean its a good song...but... these girls were such posers, sucking on their vape pens. i know i photobombed one of their bajillion selfies 'cause i had a scowl ready.
