The family of Pvt. William Bernice Clark never had a funeral for him, never got to say goodbye and never really accepted his fate among the fallen during the Normandy D-Day landings in World War II.
That was until the young soldier's dog tag, recently discovered in the sands of Omaha Beach in France, was returned to his native Tennessee on Wednesday — exactly 63 years after that tragic day

My dad was in the Pacific. They were staging for the invasion of Japan when the bombs dropped.
Think about the amount of casualities we would have taken if we would have had to invade Japan. There are a lot of folks in the world who criticize Harry Trumans decision to drop the 2 atomic bombs on Japan but in reality it saved the world millions of lives. The sheer destructive ability of those bombs not only saved the lives of the soldiers that would have had to invade Japan but the lives of the millions that would have been lost had we had a nuclear war with the USSR. Once the power of that weapon was seen both the USA and USSR realized that nuclear war would destroy the world. Both sides kept building them during the cold war but both sides would never strike 1st.
The success of operation Overlord really did save the world in a way most people don't realize. If we don't take back Europe in the west either Hitler wins the war, the Russians win then plow all the way through Germany and into France, Belgium, and Holland, or worst of all Hitler and Stalin ally against the US and Britain. Under any of those scenarios the US would be forced to use tactical nuclear strikes on Europe and Asia to ensure protection from invasion. If we don't win on D-Day we win by basically blowing up the world.
75 years ago today. If you want to read something amazing today, try this interview with a 97 (!!!) year old paratrooper who stormed the beaches of Normandy. What an f'n hero.
