I hadn't even considered it from that angle. For Wednesday specifically, the movie nostalgia it's trying to target is the goofy family comedy of the 90's. Then it becomes an outcast Nancy Drew paranormal murder mystery that seems aimed at teens and those two things clash hard for me.

Your thoughts are really interesting. It really is true especially when you're trying to do something new but have to throw in the fan service.

Not to mention the fact that many of this generation's best creatives get sucked into the intellectual property machine. I like Guardians and the Suicide Squad stuff just fine, but what would someone like James Gunn be making on their own? The Eternals was a complete nothing waste of time and money, but what would Chloe Zhao have made instead, given two years and a real studio budget? We'll never get to see it, because they'll never get the chance to make it, unless it's a watered down version stapled to some valuable IP that their studio paid too much for and needs to monetize. This is what critics like Martin Scorcese are getting at and they're totally correct when they criticize big studio's IP obsession.

I legitimately don't know what Mindy Kaling is on about here. Who is offended by "The Office"? IASIP is on its 15th season. South Park is on 26.

White Lotus is the best show on TV and it's not even close. That is all. This season is so good.

Rich person derangement syndrome. The entire success of the office hinges on the balance they struck between riding the line of appropriate and transgressive behavior, while imbuing their characters with enough pathos to still be redeemed and rooted for by the audience when they crossed the line. All transgressive behavior was portrayed by characters who's stupidity and lack of wisdom defined them. It was not flattering to those characters. The character who was given the least grace to be imperfect was Pam in the later seasons, but I found her behavior to actually be very normal and human. I know many people IRL who have let fear and insecurity get in the way of supporting their partner's dreams. In most of these IRL situations, their partner's dreams were either kind of risky/foolish or the person with the dream lacked the ability to successfully see it through, and their partner was correct to make them prioritize family over career. Jim's "business" idea in the late seasons worked out for him because it's a television show, but the idea itself was incredibly stupid and unrealistic. Starting a celebrity/sports marketing agency in Philly without connections or experience in that space would be an absolute disaster IRL.

Chloe Zhao was going to make my film: Alien vs Predator vs AT&T Lily vs Toyota Jan until Marvel came along. If the existing properties don't turn you off my STRONG men's rights undertones would have, and possibly the Hulk Hogan cameo.

First episode of Wednesday wasn't bad. More graphic and less CW than I was expecting. Jenna Ortega is good and it's got a good supporting cast. Curious to see if there's a dropoff after Tim Burton's episodes are done. Not that he's always good, especially the last 10 years or so. One problem is they give Wednesday a bunch of solid deadpan one-liners but then they let them hang too long like almost they're waiting for laughs or a laugh track. Needs more of a Gilmore Girls/Mrs Maisel pace and editing.

I agree 100% with late seasons Pam and your assessment, and I definitely sympathized more with her than with Jim. Jim unnecessarily risked family and security. As you say, of course I knew it would work out in the end because it's a sitcom where we want happy endings. I somewhat appreciated that Parks and Rec had Tom's restaurant business flame out even after he had gained the necessary business acumen because that's just how things go.

All that said, the idea that The Office would be too risque in 2022 is some absolute nonsense.

Generally, I agree with you guys. But some of that stuff wouldn't go on network TV. Michael Scott doing the Chris Rock bit?

Honestly, I think we'll soon be circling back to that kind of thing being appropriate enough again (in its flagrant offensiveness, obviously). I hope so.

It's not network TV, but Comedy Central is showing a marathon of "The Office" every night this week.
