I decided to put this here instead of the Olympics thread. Forgive me, oh mods:
Remarkable images from the Paris Olympics

The French capital's landmarks have provided an enthralling backdrop for the opening ceremony and for the competitors - with more stunning images being captured and added to this round-up every day.

Want to some advice on photographing birds? Well, you're in luck:
How to find soaring success photographing birds

When Graeme Carroll started taking pictures of birds during the coronavirus pandemic, he found a natural affinity with both the art and his avian subjects. He shared some of the secrets of his success with the BBC (but don't expect him to reveal his best locations).

Don't bug out about these pictures:

P.S. I think the picture of the snipe flies is hilarious.

Pest or picture perfect? Lives of bugs captured in striking detail

When Jimmy Reid goes looking for incredible wildlife to photograph, he doesn't have to stray very far from home. He looks under drain covers, beneath rocks and even inside the dilapidated shed in his garden in Loanhead, Midlothian.

To some, the wasps, moths, ants and spiders that emerge may be considered mundane, or even a pest. To Jimmy, a professional photographer, they are the subject of striking close-up shots revealing fascinating detail.

This is a weekly feature, and I don't usually share these here. (For those who really like photography, there is a wealth of photos posted daily and weekly on the BBC site.) However, this entry was extra cool:
Astronomy, athletes and an aardvark: Photos of the week

A selection of striking news photographs taken around the world this week.

Mike, I want to thank you for your posts in this thread. The BBC pics in particular are spectacular. And the bug shots are phenomenal.

Took these last week. Hard to take a bad photo of this if you have a phone or camera that will do it. The longer exposure for more recent iPhone cameras makes a huge difference. My son has an older phone and his pics weren't nearly this good.

*shrank them down a bit

Those are awesome! How does the camera view compare to what you see your eyes?

The green is much paler, almost white, but the shapes and the streaks are there. The pink is also not as strong, but the color is much easier to see. It shifted and changed the whole time we were there. I'd get caught up looking or taking pictures of one part, and turn around to see the other half of the sky had changed completely.

We drove about 20 minutes outside of town because we missed out trying to see it from home in May, and that helped a lot. Moon was out, so that affected it a bit, but still really impressive. We got back home and couldn't see it at all.
