My wife and I bought google nexus phones. The phone is great because it's powerful, inexpensive and you always get the latest/most pure form of the android OS. With the phones we signed-up for the t-mobile pre-paid 30 dollar unlimited 4G data and text with 100 voice min plan.

It's a great deal and I love not having a contract.

For our land line we use Ooma and that's been a great (inexpensive) experience too.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with what we're paying for our phones.

Michael I'm sure you are saving a ton of money but I have no earthly idea what you are talking about, or how to go about doing what you did. You have to be a [expletive] genius to save a few bucks. For people that don't like to think, we pay.

1) Buy a google nexus phone here. It's a really good smart phone.
2) Buy a t-mobile micro sim card here.
3) Put the sim card in the phone. Instructions will come in the box. It you are unsure take it to a t-mobile store and they will do it for you.
4) View the t-mobile plans here. Click "Which plan is right for you?". View your options. Notice the $30 dollar plan.
5) Subscribe here once you are ready. No stupid contract is required. Just pay as you go.

Enjoy.

If you have a land line Ooma is well worth it too. Currently I pay 5 dollars (taxes only) a month for nationwide unlimited minutes. The ooma service itself is free.

Currently, my wife and I pay around 65 dollars a month for all our phone services. We're pretty happy about that.

i live in an area where sprint/t-mobile get awful service...just terrible. so of the 4 bigger carriers, att/verizon are the only one's you can get a strong signal with here.

we picked att back when the iphone first came out...bought it with the unlimited talk/text/data plan, and kept it ever since. if we switch, we'll lose the unlimited plans (like i said verizon/att are the only one's to get a strong enough signal with here)...so we've just stayed with att ever since, and just get the newest iphone for $199 every 2 years.

we pay approx $200 for the 2 iphones. i'd of course like to pay less, but with our limited options, and us needing unlimited everything (for the business we're in) i just don't see another choice right now.

oh, and we'll only use an iphone, if we're picking a smartphone. kids have samsung tablets, some agencies want us to carry their smartphones, which are android based (the google nexus was the latest one), and they're all just terrible. i want a dumb smartphone. want to be able to pick it up out of the box and have it work. don't want to do any configurations at all. the google play store? my god, what a piece of [expletive] that is. half the [expletive] apps don't work. apple locks their app store down and is restrictive, but with good reason...their apps work. sorry for the side bar...but i hate android anything.

I just want to press a button and talk to someone. That's why these companies charge so much because most people are like me and too lazy to do any 5 step plan, especially one that says "Instructions will come in the box". This sounds like it could take days to setup if everything goes right.

I want I want I want I want I want.

I had a droid for 2+ years and have had an iphone for 3 days, and I have to say I agree with you.
