I like the idea of a cold weather vacation. Snowmobiling in Yellowstone? Maybe Dec is too early.

Crikey, I'd rather take the 18 hour flight in a mid-row seat on Oceanic Airlines to Sydney and back than snowmobiling or whatever it is one does in Montreal in January (the locals stay indoors AFAICT).

Outdoors stuff like hiking, etc.

Costa Rica is a perfect example expect we've already been there.
Rio is a great time...beaches or hiking and camping. And it's never cold there.

Santiago, Chile might be a good call. Mountains nearby. Beaches nearby. Wine country nearby.

Not so close are the fjords, Torres del Paine, Punta Arenas et al.

Fun fact: Santiago, Chile is one of only two airports in the world where you can board a flight to Easter Island. The other airport is Papeete (Tahiti).

Just booked a business trip to Mexico City for late January. I am both nervous and excited.

Mrs. Gashouse and I have a milestone anniversary in 2019, so we are starting to plan a kid-free vacay. Our Spanish skills are basic, so how possible is it to travel to Cuba without a group/ tour guide?

I know a guy who has made several low cost trips to Cuba. Definitely did not use a tour guide. I’ll see him tomorrow night and ask for some tips.
