It's always been Tom Waits for me. Yes, I'm certain his lyrics are deep and expose the human condition etc etc. But I can get that from a novel without having to hear music and a voice that are unlistenable.
Counterpoint - his voice is great
I think he's a terrific songwriter. I understand that his voice is odd and an acquired taste, but he knows what his voice is and uses it appropriately.
That said, for me, it's one song at a time by Waits.

Oh for sure. I just happen to like it. He does have his eras and variations when it comes to his voice, like Dylan but more extreme. I think his early stuff is very standard singer songwriter fare in tone, though a bit edgier lyrically. Then there’s one offs like The Piano Has Been Drinking where you see that gravelly voice rolled out. By the mid-eighties he’s starting to wallow in it.
I was going to mention Prince but thought I'd get thoroughly crucified. Glad to see him mentioned a few times. He's still leaps & bounds better than Petty.
Not only are they terrible human beings that should be in jail (at least Kiedis). I don't have anything constructive to say other than I just hate it so much. Garbage. Neil Hamburger jokes about RHCP are the funniest in existence.

I agree. I've always hated the Red Hot Chili Peppers. To be honest, I thought so little of them that I never considered them to be potentially legendary artists.

Agree. They've sold more albums than Johnny Cash, Nirvana, and Tom Petty so someone is buying them.
Speaking of Johnny Cash. Just kidding I love Johnny Cash.
On the country front though Hank Williams Jr. is a legendary country singer and I just don't get it. He just seems like a drunken idiot with no talent living off his Dad's name.
