Good words

Post by heyzeus »

Some words are just good. They're either funny, or sound nice. This is a thread for those words.

Nougat is one. Especially when described as "creamy nougat." You have to respect creamy nougat.

Persnickety is also a cool word. You should say it out loud right now. Persnickety. That's satisfying.

I'm no sesquipedalianist but I enjoy an occasional defenestration.

Perspicacious has always been a word I liked. It means you know things. Like the definition of perspicacious, for example.

Interestingly, in my classroom, I threaten to throw kids from our second floor window pretty often. One kid of an above average intelligence that belies his 12 years pointed out one day that there's a word for that. Since then, defenestrate/defenestration has probably been used over a hundred times in my classes this year.

Oh, and I always liked "belies." Belies. Belies. Just rolls off the tongue - belies. But now the more I say it, I get that semantic satiation. I learned that phrase from Ted Lasso.

I also like seppuku. I always have to stop and think, "Wait, is that the one where the numbers have to add up in every direction, or where the whole group of dudes spooges on the girl?"

Defenestration has always been a favorite and I am glad your students are keeping it alive. Big fan of belies as well.

I feel like the word "indeed" is underused and underappreciated
