GRB Maintenance Tonight

Post by TheoSqua »

I'm going to start upgrading the forum software tonight.

Best case scenario there is minimal down time and the site will be back up in the morning.

Worst case the whole thing blows up and we have to restore the latest backup. Which is currently from 2/7/2020.

I figure if i'm going to risk wrecking a day, better to do it over a slow weekend in the offseason than wait until the season starts.

A backup was just scheduled for 9:00 pm CST tonight. So i'll take the site down once that back up is finished. Then i'll spend some time seeing how much I can get upgraded in one night.

The first phase of maintenance has been complete.

I've reinstalled subsilver2, so if you use a specific theme you may need to adjust your settings.

Any new functionality? Or just a new coat of paint?

I think the big feature in phpbb 3.1 is the notifications. you'll now be able to see when someone quotes your post. etc.

The big thing is we went from a version released 2011 to a version released in 2018. It also allows a stepping stone to the next version (the site was so behind that we couldn't directly update to the most recent version) to get the site a bit more modern.

The big challenge is PhpBB dropped support for subsilver2 (the default GRB theme) in the next version. So if we keep upgrading we're going to need to find another theme.
