You know that some people get their news from actual news sources, not insane propagandists like Fox News? Or, for that matter, late night talk show hosts? I understand why some people are so desperate to create an equivalency, but it's really not there.wart57 wrote:Yea, get your news from Kimmel and Colbert and you will be well informed.Arthur Dent wrote:Alternate interpretation: it is easy to accept feedback in a context where you understand yourself to be valued. I think that applies here. Stupid people hate to be told when they are stupid. Most smart people would be embarrassed to know they were duped by Russian trolls. But the majority of people who were dumb enough to fall for these pretty clearly fake groups to start with? They can't possibly be wrong. Someone ELSE is to blame here.
In the case of Facebook nonsense, my first reaction is that it is super gross the way various powerful players from Fox News, to Republican politicians, to Russian manipulators are destroying people's minds with poisonous nonsense to further their cynical power games. As citizens, we all have a responsibility to inform ourselves, to identify and reject lies, and to not fall for nonsense narratives, but as a society, we're creating the conditions for this with things like the disaster that is Facebook as a source of news and information.

A plausible facebook page to enjoy is Hstory in Pictures. But jeesh, do not read one comment on the pictures. Ruins it all.

Re: Garbage on Facebook
So I am annoyed at their videos and collages and 'last month on facebook' mashup they create and present to me. So I look for somewhere I can tell them that. Unless I missed it, they won't let you leave a comment. I can select from a bullet list but in my own words? Nada.
Right - I am the product. Shut up and move on.
I spend about 30 seconds on facebook anymore - see if there are interesting notifications and quickly scan the top of my feed (which changes with every refresh) to see if there is a friend's newsy item in there (harder to find as they've reprioritized sponsored content I see). That's it.
Facebook is training this product to use less Facebook. Thank you I guess.

Re: Garbage on Facebook
Anyone else get a crap Twitter update?
Mine did last night and I hate it. Makes it a lot more like Facebook-- no more tweets in chronological order, just things I'm guessing the algorithm guesses I might like... and yet there's still an "in case you missed it" section which as far as I can tell is no different.
Not only that, but it's showing tweets in my feed that people I'm following liked... not retweeted, just liked.
It's entirely useless.

Re: Garbage on Facebook
I saw a meme on facebook today that had a photo of George Soros and said "tell congress to ban the George Soros voting machines."
So here is the new conspiritard theory on why the Republicans are going to lose in Nov. George Soros and his rigged voting machines. How in the hell can we go on as a country when you have so many [expletive] idiots that so easily fall for this [expletive]?

I think history is going to tell Facebook as one of America's more regrettable inventions, similar to the K-cup. Addictive instant gratification that makes gobs of money but ultimately accelerates the destruction of the planet and erosion of human society.
I deleted my Facebook account in May and haven't looked back since. Don't miss it at all.

Facebook has caused Mrs. Wart to go full anti-vaxer.
I hate Facebook - and it will cause actual deaths because of this anti-vaxer [expletive].
