It’s been pretty nice with normal temperatures for this time of year here in south central Pennsylvania lately but now a couple of inches of snow for Tuesday then back to single digit temps for later in the week.

i swear wichita has been in the "not really going to get hit that hard" sweet spot all year. i mean, yeah it was 9 degrees when i left for work, i think high of 25 but will get back to 50s by friday/weekend. saw on a radar map and we are just barely outside of the furthest zone of impact or whatever. seems like it's been like that all year, just out of range of the big storms. think KC has gotten a lot this year. anyways.

It was -27 when I woke up this morning with a wind chill of -51. The high today in Minneapolis is -17, low is -35. Wind chills are expected to hit -60 tonight.

Working on low level firmware for various electronics and microprocessors, I can tell you that a lot of electronics that are designed for outdoor applications meet a standard that tests them down to -40 degrees. Some only down to -10 or so.

For instance I was on a team that designed small internet gateways for wireless applications that couldn't handle Canadian winter because it was only rated down to -10 and the microprocessor stopped working on cold nights. Oops! We spent lot of money 'hardening' them down to -40. That might not still be enough for today in the midwest.

Be careful out there.

It's negative alot here this morning. I think I'm done with all my outside work for the day. Supposed to be nearly 60 this weekend. Pretty wild to think we are going to have about an 80 degree temperature change.

I'm not really too bummed about the extremes in Chicago. We had a mild November and more days with a high in the 50s in December than in the 20s. I'll happily trade a couple weeks of F-grade weather amidst an overall mild winter for a winter of mostly D-grade with a couple glmpses of C-minus.
