Speaking as a poker player, I'm seen a lot of gambling addiction. The local casinos are the worst. I've said to people before I'd rather have a heroin addiction over a gambling addition. They always think I'm joking but I'm not. People with gambling addictions have something like a 5x suicide rate over people with drug addictions. I'd also argue a gambling addiction put more stress on families than drugs. It's a horrible disease.
That's why I never liked going to boats like Aurora or Elgin. In big casinos it's mostly people who are gambling for entertainment, but in place like those you just know it is rent checks being wagered.

...I've only played friendly quarter ante poker - but IIRC drinking hindered my ability. Greatly. I can only imagine if someone is a gambling addict with a lot at stake AND is drinking , what a terrible losing combo.

Also, a desperate person is typically tired mentally. You are less likely to make decent decisions tired.

I've been talking to my wife about how we should start drinking more. I decided to really go for it over the weekend. I had 5 beers over two days. It was crazy.

Let me know when you want to get serious.

I drank quite a bit when this first started. Now I'm going 5 to 7 days without drinking at all.

I think I'm going to do it up Friday night and Saturday while smoking baby backs, chicken in butter and jalapeno cheddar brats.

i've been drinking on friday and saturday. i buy a 6 pack of white claw and have 3 on friday and 3 on saturday. i feel like a wimp but whatever, that stuff does the least damage to my body and still gives me a buzz. i love beer, it can be so tasty... but it just, anymore, makes me feel so fatty and bloaty. vodka is a spirit that my body does well with but i don't like having a bottle around 'cause it's too easy to make another drink.

You've seen "Win It All" right? Not necessarily a great message to send gambling addicts (one big score to save your ass is possible), but as a Chicago poker player, it couldn't be more up your alley.

Btw, one big score to save your ass gambling movies is a phenomenal movie micro genre. Mississippi Grind, California Split, Rounders, Cincinnate Kid, The Hustler, Color of Money, etc. Name a bad one...you cannot.

I haven’t had a drink during quarantine yet. I’m not sure why.
