I use this with colleagues when I have explained how an area of our software system works. To me its better than "Understand?" or "Get it?" or "Capiche?".

Because, god knows, when I go back and look at my code a month later, I'm wondering what the hell I was thinking. So its my why of asking for validation as well.

I don't mean it condescending at all and I hope its not taken that way.

I tend to go with As Good As It Gets style Jack Nicholson "Do you get me, sweetheart?"

I would guess it is just part of his speech pattern. Something he says without even thinking about it. Like people who say "um" or "you know". I think you can casually mention it to him without worrying how it comes off.

I just answer, 'not really'. And walk away.

I find myself saying "I understand the words coming out of your mouth just fine. But I'm still trying to connect the dots."
