Have patience. On a good year it takes them 9 months to a year to get these things straight. This year is going to be a disaster. You don't have anything to worry about though, as you are correct. You might keep getting letters, even threatening to put a levy on your property, but you can ignore them.Radbird wrote: ↑March 2 21, 5:16 pmI got a letter from IRS last month saying I hadn’t filed my 2019 tax return. It was easy to prove they were wrong since I owed money and mailed a check. Couldn’t get through by phone, so I filled out the form they sent and included a copy of return and cancelled check, so ball is back in their court.

I got a CP2000 notice December 28 from the IRS that they'd identified 2018 income I hadn't reported on my 2018 return. So I responded January 13 to clear that up, and to the best of my knowledge that reply is still sitting in their mail room unopened. I think this because I got another notice 2 weeks ago, a CP2319A notice, restating their original estimates from the CP2000. So I called the IRS and asked if they had received my original response I mailed in January. They said that no, they haven't, and that it was probably still waiting to be processed. This time I faxed my reply to the CP2319A just to be more sure it would actually be received, although the rep I spoke with on the phone told me that faxing a response would not make it get processed any faster than snail mailing it.

They really need to simplify the tax system. No loopholes. No different between income and capital gains. Set a nice progression margin and then tie the boundaries of the tax brackets to inflation.
What is the sum of all my earnings? Oh, I see I land in the 3rd tax bracket. That means I owed X over the year. Was that amount withheld already? Do I owe or get a refund? BAM. Done.

I'd be happy with that. Taxes are just a sideline now for me. All my time is auditing government entities, and at the pace of people getting out of that, and the increases in governmental spending, business is good.

Got another letter from the IRS June 1 and opened it with dread, but looks like my response to their first CP2000 was finally evaluated and they've agreed to lower my 2018 liability as I suggested. Probably because I threatened to sic Leroy on them if they didn't.G. Re: The IRS - You're killing me.
So I didn't report my stimulus payment. It just didn't occur to me since I didn't get a form for it. So in September I got a letter that I still owed a little over $1,000. Fine, whatever. I paid it via the online option. I was even (grudgingly) willing to pay the ~$30 fee to do so (that's a whole other rant) -- to make sure it got through immediately. I have the confirmation email and I can see my zero balance on the IRS website. But I just got a letter that I still owe that money. And now I'm on hold with them to find out what the hell is going on.
IRS, you're killing me.

Seriously, don't panic, give it time. It eventually will work itself out. And I'm not joking when I say at least six months. It could take two years. Just ignore the scary letters. You are right, they are wrong. Eventually they will get it.
Also, if you need help with writing a response letter, I'm pretty good at it. Better than sitting hours on the phone.

Thanks Leroy! After about 45 minutes on hold, I did get through to a very helpful and nice lady actually. I meant to post the follow up but got sidetracked. She confirmed she saw a zero balance and I asked if it's safe to assume if I'm seeing a zero balance on their website that I can ignore the letters and she said yes. So your validation of this makes me feel even better.

Happy Day! I had a trust return rejected for I had no idea why, and called, was on hold for probably an hour, then was told I used wrong extension but was transferred, held for another half hour (the speaker option on a phone is the best), but finally got a pretty cool dude who knew exactly what the problem was and how to fix it.
Thumbs up from a usually disgruntled tax preparer!
