This is an awesome beer. They sell it at the Tinderbox in Columbia, but I've never seen it anywhere else.

Hmm. I had a bock in Germany that also claimed to be the strongest lager beer in the world. There seems to be conflicting opinions.

FYI, it tasted completely terrible. Possibly the worst beer I've ever drank. I applaud them for pushing the 20%'s with a lager. But I think I'll just stick with a nice doppelbock and call it good.

2 questions.

1.) Is that a weizenbock? I thought Weihenstephaner only made wheat beers, but I may be mistaken.

2.) Don't they know that doppelbocks have to end in -ator? Does not apply if #1 is true.


EDIT: After a bit of research, I find my answers. They do brew a few non-wheat beers, and it is apparently a doppelbock. This renders my post completely moot except for the -ator.

1.) It's definitively a double bock, although I think Weihenstephaner does specialize in wheat beers. Their Hefeweissbier is very nice, and they do in fact make a Dunkel version of it.

2.) Yeah, one of the few doppelbocks I've run across that doesn't end in -ator (Celebrator still being my favorite bock).

I enjoy their dunkel all the time. Very tasty.

I go for the gold standard in Salvator. I know I'm in the minority there.

After reading about Guinness and seeing TFG repping it in every post I can't wait until tomorrow until I have my first drink of it. Am I in for a surprise? A bad surprise?

I also highly recommend Maui Brewing Company's CoCoNuT Porter. It's not easy to make a good spiced beer (especially with something like coconut), but those folks pulled it off.

The people you have heard these comps from are idiots when it comes to beer and should never be spoken to again.

Guinness on tap is not very heavy at all. In fact, it's quite creamy because of the nitro. It gets it's bitterness from the roast, like coffee. If you like roasted bitterness like that, you'll probably enjoy Guinness. If you don't like coffee, there's a good chance you won't like Guinness.

Tasting tip: drink it across the roof of your mouth, if that makes sense. It's not water--don't let it just slide over your tongue head to the back of your throat. I find that breathing back out your nose after taking a drink helps accentuate the more subtle flavors, especially in darker beers.

With most dark beers, head is not bad. Head is good. Head is like cool whip on top of chocolate. You can just sip the head off the top and enjoy it.

Head on typical American macrobrews (BudMillerCoors) is bad. It doesn't taste good in any way.
