"seemed to care"....perfectly stated.heyzeus wrote:Exactly. Time to wrap our heads around the notion that there is no more mythological True Cardinal like Stan Musial. He was the last of that mold. The players we love today will be gone tomorrow for the right price. Even ones that seemed to care about this legacy stuff, like AP.jagtrader wrote:Rough day for Cardinals fans. We lost a legendary player, the defining player of our generation. That's the nature of the game now. Sad but true.

Yeah, I've been pointing out AP to my kids, explaining to them they're watching history. To them, Cards and AP were synonymous. I guess I get to explain to them the business side of pro sports. Joy.dmarx114 wrote:Thanks for 10 great years Albert.
Now, how am I going to explain to my 5 year old that Pujols isn't on the team anymore?

The sentimental idiot in me hoped the Stan picture would melt him down, of course I've never been offered a quarter billion so foolish sentimentality is all I've got.

Toss aside sentimentality, best thing that can happen for Cardinal fans. We've seen the team be in the postion before of paying a few players the majority of the payroll, and surrounding them with Pedro Feliz and the like. The team will still be good, with room and money to add pieces that will make it better. We won't find ourselves in 2020 with an aging, disgruntled, overpaid, beaten up, falling apart, 40 year old first baseman.

I can't blame him for taking the cash. I can't blame him for asking for it and filing for free agency. I don't blame STL for not matching. But I still can't help but feel less...charmed by him.
I had this kind of romantic notion of having one of the greatest careers ever for one team in a time that no one stays with one team. I suppose it was unrealistic, but it cheapens Pujols to me a little.
