Maybe there is hope for the CT crowd after all. Burwell is rightly getting skewered by commentators for his absurd oped piece on the Pujols negotiation in today's PD. Burwell keeps citing Pujols getting underpaid (actually, he outpeformed--a nuanced by important difference) on his first deal as justification for a break-the-bank deal to keep him a Cardinal forever, as if money does not matter to this club. 95% of the comments call BS on Burwell's absurd logic.

This is my favorite line of thought ever. "Hey guys, we made a really smart business decision last time, so this time, let's make a really stupid one to balance it out! Remember, there should be no winners and losers in business!"Hungary Jack wrote:Burwell keeps citing Pujols getting underpaid (actually, he outpeformed--a nuanced by important difference) on his first deal as justification for a break-the-bank deal to keep him a Cardinal forever, as if money does not matter to this club. 95% of the comments call BS on Burwell's absurd logic.

I wonder if Burwell actually believes what he writes, or is simply taking one side so that another columnist can occupy the opposing position. It would seem a hedging strategy to try to attract more readers. You see this type of nonsense on The Sports Network all the time.

I don't care whether Spagnuolo hangs around until season's end or not. But Burwell seems to think "Spags" should stick around next year too.
Anyway, his column, which I rarely read, cracked me up today for some reason.
He deserved the Burwellian Headline that the editors gave him today

and finishes with this gem

And he pulls a Bernie and uses screaming internet crazies for his straw manBurwell: Firing the coach could be a mistake
Then he goes on with thisJust do something, anything, just as long as you do it in a hurry to soothe the angry Internet advocates who are screeching from behind anonymous avatars that they will stop buying their imaginary season tickets unless Kroenke responds immediately to their demands.
But Kroenke has promised no such approach. He has promised a meticulous scrutiny of the situation, and with three weeks to go in this lost season, he seems to be holding firm to his promise.

Then he goes on and compares Spagnuolo's Ram record to Belichick for the rest of the article.]It's possible that a coach can struggle mightily when faced with a bad situation, then turn into a great coach. I'm not ready to compare Steve Spagnuolo to New England living legend Bill Belichick, but it bears repeating that the best coach of this generation was regarded as a failure in his first head-coaching stint in Cleveland (36-44 record between 1991 and 1995).
and finishes with this gem
If no one buys into the offseason moves enthusiastically, that is to be expected because of more than a decade of less than satisfying results. But if Kroenke makes the right decisions and puts the proper people in place to help the ones who are already here who know what they are doing, and this results in winning football games once the regular season starts, that will not only put people in the seats, but keep them there.

Evidently there's no comparison of notes between Bernie and Burwell. Berniewrote that AP and Lozano told the Cards in 2009 that they wouldn't sign early, but would go to FA. A day or two later Burwell's still taking the team to task for not signing him in 2009. Of course, that fact wouldn't fit the gist of the column Burwell was writing.

Nice work from Jeff Gordon.
Some pundits wonder if GMs are colluding against Boras clients such as Prince Fielder this winter. A more likely explanation is that teams have decided to set their own valuation on players and not budge off them, irregardless of what “mystery teams” were willing to pay.

Gordo says Albert is sucking in Anaheim because he lacks lineup protection.

I saw Gordo out at Castlewood St Park walking his dogs. He was doing that all wrong too.
