There are few, because now there are defensive backs around the league as big as Larry Csonka. Running backs have gotten faster while the rest of the league got bigger.

He only averaged 4.3 yards a carry back then. I don't think he'd average 2 now.

According to Don Shula, the '72 Dolphins celebrating when the last unbeaten team loses is a urban legend, but I'll bet there are Dolphin fans who are popping corks. My Packers had a great run, the best in the history of the team (since 1921), but in the end you have to tip your cap to perfection.

But in the next breath he did say some guys would call each other and have toast over the phone. I would.

They must make a lot of phone calls during the first few weeks of the season.

I have a hard time liking the '72 Dolphins for a couple of reasons:

1. If you're a fan of a team that's gone down the "can they go undefeated?" road, it can be kind of annoying to know the players from that '72 team celebrate your teams loss. I never minded those guys until Denver made their run at perfection in '98.

2. Mercury Morris annoys me to no end. I almost worry for what might happen to the guy if another team did reach perfection. What little relevance he has left would be gone. Even when it looked like the Pats might go undefeated a few years ago he still wouldn't shut up. Didn't he actually say Miami would still be the greatest b/c they did it first?

As much as I might be annoyed though, you have to give that Miami team credit. They did it and no one else has. It's also kind of cool that Miami is the team that kept the '85 Bears from possibly reaching that standard.

Richie I am sorry but you just don't get it. The human race has evolved into a super human race in the mere span of 40 years. This super human race that now exists that did not exist in 1972 would not allow the Dolphins to compete. This super race of people on a super duper hyper accelerated evolutionary path is simply better. Smarter, bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, faster, more doped up, faster, stronger, use different training methods, smarter, faster, bigger, doped up, doped up, doped up and faster. Stronger too, and more doped up and better trained and bigger and doped up.

Yes the super humanoid of today would simply be too much for Larry Csonka and his crew, who if born today would not benefit from nutrition, training, etc... No sir, this is simple evolution at work here, and 40 years is plenty of time.
