I'm scratching off Friday Night Lights. Started at season 4 because I heard somewhere that's the best one. It's good. But it's SO soap operaishy. There's at least one storyline every episode that I wish wasn't there, and that if fast forwarding on Netflix was easier I totally would flip through. Instead I just sit there and say 'Sweeet Jebus, I don't care!' In other words, it's exactly like my Mad Men experience. Trim the fat and I like the show as much as everyone else.
WTF is happening to men and television viewing? Throw a football team into Dawson's Creek and suddenly it's awesome?
Also, Buddy's 'I'm not a Panther anymore!' scene is one of the most unintenionally funny scenes I've ever seen.

Portlandia has funny ideas, but for the most part they aren't well-executed and you don't actually laugh. I gave up during the first season.

I have never laughed at anything Fred Armisen has done. The very small amount of Portlandia that I've seen was no different.

I've enjoyed several of his impressions (David Patterson FTW) and he's had some great contributions to Weekend Update.JL21 wrote:I have never laughed at anything Fred Armisen has done. The very small amount of Portlandia that I've seen was no different.

Fred Armisen is hilarious. He's great as Obama.

Starting in season 4? What the hell are you doing? Start from season 1 like you're supposed to and check back in.MrSaigon wrote:I'm scratching off Friday Night Lights. The chicken farm sketch was great, agreed, but that's been the only one I've liked in the 4 or 5 episodes I've seen so far. All the sketches have the same punchline. When they try to be weird and more abstract they aren't actually being weird. A lot of their sketches remind me of stuff you could have seen done much better years ago on shows like Big Train or Mighty Boosh.ghostrunner wrote:I think they've had some really good sketches on there. The one where the couple goes to the organic farm, and Jason Sudeikis seduces them is great. One of those sketches where I totally get it, but I'm not sure why I get it. I liked the one where they go to the marketing agency and get lost trying to go to a meeting, and it ends up in that bird's nest thing. My wife briefly worked at an agency that had a meeting "cloud" which was basically a white inflatable room, so it resonated a bit. The women's bookstore skit is pretty one-note and maybe a cheap shot, but I still like it.
Oh, and I thought the one with Aimee Mann being a housekeeper was pretty clever, if not laugh out loud funny.
Then there is that while supposedly mocking Portland the show is really just an ongoing advertisement for the cult of Portland.

The chicken farm and opening number were great, but the show peaked in the first 15 minutes. It's all sort of funny, and maybe not well-executed isn't the best way to put it. It's just generally devoid of punchlines so it's hard to really laugh.
I bet it's a really funny writer's room.
