WA State Democratic Precinct Caucuses

Post by Mary1966 »

In 2008 we had over 200 people show up at my precinct caucus. Today we had 9. We had 11 delegates allocated to our precinct, but only 7 people wanted to be a delegate, so we lost the other 4 delegates. Everyone was for Obama of course, so we voted for our 7 person slate unanimously. The whole process took a little over an hour. I now get to go on to the 6th Congressional District Caucus on April 28th and the Pierce County Convention on April 29th. I expect that they will be scaled down similarly from 2008. I'm not planning on trying to become a national delegate so this will probably be the end of my personal involvement. The only issue that got any attention was Referendum 74, an attempt to overturn the State Legislature's vote in February to legalize gay marriage. The Catholic archbishop of Seattle has asked for signatures to put it on the ballot (a "no" vote would repeal the law), our pastor got up at Saturday Mass last night and said that our parish council had decided not to collect signatures because they felt it would be hurtful to people in our parish community (our parish is well known for being gay friendly).

How does a pastor get away with that? The church hierarchy isn't particularly subtle on this issue.

The Democratic primaries remind me of the SNL skit about returning the Olympic torch to Greece.

Without a primary contender I'm sure caucus turn out would be low. You should try and be a national delegate though, the national convention is very exciting. Wish I could go this year.

There are plenty of people with more experience than me who want to go and you have to pay your own way, which is out of my price range.

They seem to not get away with much.
