FWIW, some of the players who've worn #5 in the past include Mike Ramsey and Thomas Howard.Vidor wrote:Totally. And the less important the player, the better. I would have given it to Komatsu.BW23 wrote:I'm ready for number 5 to be assigned to someone. The sooner the better, in my opinion.

If (or when, depending on your viewpoint) Albert goes into the HoF, do the Cardinals retire #5?
Assuming that he will have put up better career numbers with the Cards than the Angels, wouldn't the Hall decide that he goes in wearing a Cards cap?

Of course, due to his 10 year personal service contract with the Angels, Pujols wouldn't be able to make an appearance at Busch to retire his number until 5 years after he gets inducted into the HOF.

Re: Pujols..ha
They speculated on one of the weekend's broadcasts (Friday, maybe) that Albert wouldn't be allowed to participate in anything with regards to the Cards due to his personal services contract. That means 10 years after he quits (and he'd make the HOF 5 years after), he won't be allowed to participate in anything Cardinal related.
Pujols has stated that he doesn't care if someone else wears the number. He signed a deal that precludes him from participating in anything at Busch for the next 20 years.
I say give it to someone else and wait 20 years before deciding on whether or not to retire it. He put that off for 20 years. The Cards should, too.

I say retire it immediately upon his HoF induction. It would be the memorial he deserves for 11 years as a Cardinal, and retiring the number when he can't come to the stadium would be a big middle finger. Best of both worlds!

I think he's pressing because he hears the whispers, more like screams now, of his decline. He's trying to do too much and not staying disciplined.
But hey, you know what they say, not my first baseman not my problem.

I think the Angels would allow Albert to come to Busch for a ceremony like that. They don't suffer anything from Albert coming here so long as they have full access to him when they want him there.

what do they want him for really though? Just a PR contract? If he was a good coach wouldn't Ryan/Rasmus have been silver-sluggers?Fat Strat wrote:I think the Angels would allow Albert to come to Busch for a ceremony like that. I think the ps contract is to attempt to get Pujols into the HOF as an Angel, assuming he puts up good numbers there.
I liken it to McGwire and StL. Not that Mac was necessarily a HOF caliber guy before coming to StL, but (steroids aside) he would have certainly gotten in because of what he did in StL. Yes, he broke the single-season HR record in StL, but he also hit some milestone marks while in StL. He played two full seasons in StL, was hurt during 2 more, and played the final two months of 97 after being dealt to StL.
He had 7 seasons where he played over 130 games in Oakland, only 2 in StL and one combined.
Mac would have gone into the HOF as a Cardinal, IMO.
If Pujols stays relatively healthy, he'll hit some pretty big milestones in Anaheim. Magical 500 should come next year. He'll be the next active guy to do that. 600 will be the next one, and really, Pujols is quite possibly the only guy that will get to that mark in the next 10 years. Then you have to start thinking about 630 (Griffey), 660 (Mays) and 714 (Ruth)...and wherever A-Rod ends up.
And think about this. Bonds will likely never get into the HOF. A-Rod might have a hard time. Assuming Pujols is clean and stays clean, he'll be in extremely elite company.
Yes, he achieved HOF status in StL already, but some of his most memorable personal accomplishments (milestones) will come with a halo on his hat even though he left baseball heaven.
