Super-tough trivia question....

Post by ChrisInDC »

...and no, I don't think I have the answer. Yet.

The question is this: what was the last major league team to start 9 guys in a World Series game where all 9 were home-grown product? If they were traded for as minor leaguers but never played in the Bigs first, they count as "homegrown" (So, David Freese would count as a homegrown guy).

So far the closest I can find is the '87 Twins, where only Dan Gladden mucked up a perfect 9.

Anyone?

I don't agree with that definition of "homegrown". No idea what the answer is. I know, I'm super helpful.

Maybe the 1958 Yankees?

Excellent question. And the opposite question would be just as good - what was the last team to start nine players in a WS game where *none* of the nine were home-grown?

If I had to take a stab, I'd think one of the Marlins' WS teams might qualify there.

And I think the definition in Chris' question is OK - in the sense that a player making his major-league debut for a team could be considered "home grown", although it might be better if he had a year or two in the minors after being obtained, *before* he makes his debut, which would keep Freese in there but would disqualify someone like, say, Komatsu.

It can't be the Marlins, Conine started out with the Royals.

JMo was suggesting the Marlins had ZERO homegrown starters by the OP's definition.

The Marlins always had a couple home-grown guys in the starting lineups of the WS teams (i.e. Renteria, Miguel Cabrera, etc), but they did come pretty close some games.

The Diamondbacks had some games in the 2001 Series where they didn't start anyone who came up through their organization.

I believe the 1995 Braves had 7/9, and 4/5 in their starting rotation?

The Mets doing that yesterday is what prompted the question, actually.

And it turns out that the 1958 Yankees answer is most likely correct.
