Grafts can be taken from anywhere. Mine came from a cadavers hamstring. Tiger Woods got his graft taken for his hamstring from his opposite leg. Typically they do the same leg because most people have to get around w limited help for the next couple weeks and it's easier to hobble on one leg (or crutches) than have someone push you in a wheelchair (if both legs are out of commission) everywhere you go. Of course, these guys have all the assistance you could ask for so being in a wheelchair for a few days/weeks is no big deal.

Mine came from my hammy because the patellar graft is not a good idea for people who spend time on their knees.

Same here...they took my hammy on the same leg as my ACL tear. Rehab was longer, but I didn't want to sacrifice rolling around with my kids, and now it's about 95% back to normal after 2 years (I doubt I'll ever get the last 5% back).

The reason you don't see active athletes (golfers don't count as athetes btw) get a hamstring graft is because it creates scar tissue in the hamstring, making them more susceptible to hamstring pulls.

Goddammit, Paletta, I am an active athlete, of sorts.

So they'd rather risk fractured knee caps? Doesn't make sense...I would think most would go for the cadaver graft. Minimal downtime, but higher risk the graft won't take.

Rejection is the risk there. All I know is most athletes avoid the hamstring graft because 1)it weakenens the hamstring - a naturally fragile part of the body for an athlete and 2) it is not as natural of a fit as patella or an Achilles from a cadaver. I think for weekend warriors and the general public the hamstring graft makes more sense, but not for high end athletes.

He should head out to Vail for a visit to Steadman. That would be a good place to rehab, unless you like to hike.
