Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Oswalt threw for the Phillies and Red Sox recently. He says Oswalt is throwing for two other teams — mystery teams! — too. Jon Heyman is saying that Oswalt expects to be back in the bigs within a month. His CBS colleague Scott Miller says that he wants to pitch by June, but “only for team with good chance at World Series.”

Pitched for Boston and Philly but wants a good chance at a World Series... does not compute!

Carpenter might not pitch this year. Adam Wainwright is sporting a 5.77 ERA. Hm.

I would definitely be in support of signing Oswalt so that Waino can work out of the pen for a little while. He could always move back to the rotation when his stuff is right and then we'll probably have another pitcher hurt at that point anyway.

INJURY UPDATE: Carpenter has spent the past few weeks strengthening his shoulder and preparing for a throwing program. He said his neck and shoulder feel great, but the true test will come when he picks up a baseball.

“Just a lot of rehab right now. We're taking our time,” he said. “There was a neck issue that affected the nerves in my arm. With my past history, we're slowing everything down and getting everything working properly.”

In 2004, Carpenter was sidelined with a nerve-related injury late in the season and didn't pitch against the Red Sox in the World Series.

“To be honest with you, with everything that's gone on in my career, I'm playing with fire all the time. I'm OK with it. You deal with injuries in this business. You never want an injury to end your career, but you deal with it all the time in this business. Fortunately, we have great trainers and doctors that get you back on the field.”

Asked if he'll be ready to pitch in the 2012 postseason, he said, “I think I'll be back before that, to be honest with you. I just can't answer that question until I start throwing again.”

I broke my neck in a car accident back in '99. A hairline fracture which required a brace for three months but no surgery. The C-4 vertebrae naturally fused with the adjoining ones.

I'm a weekend athlete at best but, I tried throwing a few months after the brace came off and things felt so weird. There was this lull in the middle of the motion that I can't really describe.

I can only imagine what Carp's going through

I think I'm ready to sign Oswalt now. I know it's really early and we had a killer first few weeks but I'm starting to feel nervous about the whole pitching staff.

I can't believe people really thought this staff would hold up for the entire year. We need Oswalt, this isn't a luxury it's a necessity.

I don't think anyone would argue that depth is a necessity, nor do I think anyone figured the staff would hold up all year. The question is whether or not they should spend the money it would take to get Oswalt to add depth, or find something else either when kids on the farm develop or in the trade market. If something else less costly develops, they still have the wiggle room to add payroll at the trade deadline to address other needs.

For what it's worth, I'm in favor of Oswalt, but I think the idea behind being patient has lots of merit. Fortunately, they have a little time to make the decision because there's no other dominant force in the division.
