Yes, I think the teacher did go about this the wrong way, they probably should have given her an award for being special in her own unique non-homework doing ways. (Yes I am still being an asshat - I embracing the role.)
It would be interesting to see if other students also got similar “awards” but did not complain.

It was for being the best at coming up with excuses, not the dumbest kid in the class or something. Biggest smart alec, class clown, biggest mooch, etc are all awards given by schools....should we get rid of these as well?

I see nothing wrong with it, especially when it's a skill that like it or not will come in extremely handy. Hell, I wish I could make up excuses better sometimes. And, on top of that, is something that she probably earned. If she doesn't want it, tough [expletive], do your work and don't come up with excuses.

Class clown awards and the like are typically voted on by students, and students that are much older than 8 years old(I've also never heard of biggest smart alec or biggest mooch, but it's a big world). I'd like to think that public humiliation should be off the table as a deterrent for 8 year olds, but maybe that makes me new-agey.

i too am not for coddling kids and i think teachers are getting hammered way too much by parents who believe their kids never do anything wrong but it seems like a stupid idea for the teacher. i think holding a student back a year or sending them to summer school would be just as "embarrassing" and private...to a degree.

It was a joke...
What is this world coming to when you can't even ridicule an 8 year old any more.

In my grade school there was a teacher whose punishment for chewing gum in class was you had to wear it on your forehead the rest of the day.
