A lot of farmers I know have bad bodies. Too much suckling on the taxpayer teat.

So you'd think that farmers who grow these crops must be really hurting. And that's certainly the impression you get from media reports. Nick Guetterman, president of the Johnson County Farm Bureau in eastern Kansas, tells The New York Times: "You take what you get, that's all you can do. You go to church and pray."

But how's this for a surprising fact? On average, corn growers actually will rake in a record amount of cash from their harvest this year. And that's not even counting the payments that many of them will receive from their crop insurance.

Yes, if you were lucky to get timely rains this summer you will be absolutely rolling in the cash because of $8 corn, but you sure the hell won't get insurance pay outs. How would good corn get payouts? It would be like taking your brand new car off the show room and filing an insurance claim. MOST farmers will have a bad year. There are farmers near us that will go under this year from the drought. Particularly the younger ones, and some of the older ones that have been stretching things too thin. We were already approached by one land owner asking if we'd farm for him next year because the farmer that farms his land isn't expected to make it.

We've harvested 110 acres so far and to our surprise we are averaging about 100 bu/acre. Which sucks, but it's better then we expected. Double that would be a "good" year. Our neighbors have harvested 65 acres so far and their average is 8 bu/acre. Insurance, subsidies, or whatever it is people want to [expletive] about today, they are going to have a very bad year no matter what.

The article does say there will be winners and losers but it's funny how it spends much more time talking about the winners. Why is it when oil prices, building materials, diamonds, or even stock prices are high everyone talks about the free market and capitalism, but when it comes to grain it's the evil farmer taking from the tax payer? All those other markets get subsidies too where are the countless articles running them down. Why don't we have a "rant oil tycoons" or "rant bankers" thread?

Chalk it up to people not knowing near as much as they think they do.

Good point since the article is about how people think all farmers are getting killed this summer and it turns out that some are doing quite well.

Apparently farmers are as defensive as the rest of humanity.
