Now I can't find the link, but when I was reading about this I stumbled upon a site (I think it was the NY Times) that said McCaskill paid (not sure how) a lot of money to ensure Akin was the candidate she faced, because of stuff like this.

Say goodnight, Todd Akin
By Melinda Henneberger
No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as “too conservative.’’ Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as she’d hoped. But after his Sunday comment that “legitimate rape” rarely leads
Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., announcing his candidacy for U.S. Senate, in Creve Coeur, Mo. last year. (Jeff Roberson - AP) to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.

Basically her campaign ran 'Todd Akin is too conservative for MO' spots with her name on the assuring or hoping anyway that Conservatives would flock to him in opposition to her.

I believe Todd Akin might [expletive] up a wet dream.

He would ruin my wet dream if he appeared for some god foresaken reason, I am sure about that. I wouldn't be able to think about sex again for months. I'd have to go to a psychotherapist for electro-shock treatments.

Maybe I was wrong--conservatives calling on Akin to quit is a bad sign for him. With any luck he'll go full Christine O'Donnell.

McCaskill is the perfect candidate to take advantage of this. Throwing this out in a race against a female former prosecutor could be fatal for Akin's campaign. It's gonna be tough for him to get any female support now.

I'd put money on McCaskill still losing. She's in a no-win situation. She'll lose to Mr. Misogyny or his replacement.

Well the Republicans would have to get him to drop out by Tuesday in order to replace him. While he's in hot water now, I really don't see that happening - it's his decision, and he's not likely to give up the nomination this easily.

Keep in mind McCaskill has historically been a strong campaigner with very good outstate appeal for a Democrat. The Obama issue is a negative for her, but she has an extremely weak opponent (obviously) and strong geographic advantage. She'll carry STL and KC overwhelmingly because she's not Todd Akin, and pick off quite a few votes in the rural areas. Akin will still win handily there, but she can probably pick off just enough to win it.

Before this happened I thought she'd win because of the geography issue - this only adds to that.

One is reminded of Harry Reid. He had absolutely no business whatsoever winning in 2010, but then the Nevada GOP goes and nominates just the absolute worst person they could find other than that guy who owns the whorehouse.
