Didn't they use to play Georgia Tech fairly frequently?

Re: congrats to the domerz
You truly believe those teams would have bolted for the ACC if ND was playing them every year as a legitimate conference member? I don't! I'm amused by the absence of logic here: ND football is rationalized as blameless, and powerless to help build BE football, and yet now that they've stooped to offer FIVE WHOLE GAMES a year to a clearly desperate ACC, it's suddenly a "great arrangement" for both sides--sorry, but you can't have it both ways....ndistops wrote:The Big East fell into irrelevance because the ACC raided it for BC, Miami and Va Tech, and then when the Big East did a great job restocking, the ACC raided it again for Pitt and Syracuse. Notre Dame is not and was not responsible for keeping the Big East upright in football.
For a school that allegedly prides it self on things like leadsrship and innovation, ND fell woefully short here.... they had an amazing opportunity to be THE catalyst, THE innovater in ushering in a renaissance of East Coast football. Instead, they watched from their mountain of NBC cash as the BE was plundered and pillaged into football irrelevance.
c'mon--ND adds NOTHING to the ACC that isn't already there --IN SPADES-- in terms of hoops power, tradition, and competitiveness; this move helps ND hoops INFINITELY more than it helps ACC hoops!ndistops wrote:The move was a good one for both sides. The ACC was already going to be the best basketball league once Pitt and Syracuse join up, and ND's hoops, while not a blue-blood, is a strong program and will make the league just a touch better.
Just like I said above in my original post, ND used the BE like a toilet-- they took what THEY needed, didn't add anything to the quality of the conference, and promptly discarded the league that willingly sustained their non-revenue sports once another, better sucker league came calling....ndistops wrote:ND basketball gets to avoid having to play the Houston's, UCF's and SMU's of the world in what remains of the Big East. (I love(d) the Big East basketball league, but once Pitt and Syracuse left it wasn't really going to feel like the Big East anymore.)
I give ND all the credit in the world for yet another amazingly shrewd sales job--one that again takes care of all THEIR needs, with a bare minimum of commitment. I'm also proud that MY conference recognized this "relationship" as pure "toro-caca" from the outset, and advised ND to find a more desperate, less self-confident taker for its "Mystical, Magical ND Brand Power Elixir"ndistops wrote:It should be a mutually beneficial relationship.....

It's a pity what happened to the Big East. Although one could argue they were doomed in advance by Penn State's decision to abandon all its old rivals and join a conference it didn't belong in.

This is an interesting point...if you believe old-time Penn State folks, they say that throughout the 1970s and 80s, Paterno came with his hat in hand to Pitt, WVU, Syracuse, BC, et.al. with the idea of forming an East Coast football conference, under which these schools could consolidate their bargaining power as a region...the story goes that Paterno was told by the others --in no uncertain terms-- to go pound sand, apparently because the others feared they'd merely be fodder for Penn State's quest for dominance...Vidor wrote:It's a pity what happened to the Big East. Only then did PSU turn its attention to joining the B1G.

Read your history. The Big East was trying to do the same thing to the ACC that the ACC eventually did to the Big East in the mid to late-1990s, but the Big East's basketball-only schools (Georgetown, St. John's, UConn, et al) overruled the idea because they didn't want to dilute the basketball product by adding Florida State and other football schools.
It's also amusing that your favorite school is a member of a conference who would love nothing more than to add ND as a member, suck every penny dry from the decreasing relevance that ND football would have as a result of aligning itself with a bunch of Midwestern state schools who share nothing in common but geography with the Irish, and then turn them into the B1G's second Northwestern. And yet you are telling me what ND didn't do with the Big East was somehow wrong.
The Big East knew exactly what they were getting when they added ND's non-football sports. It's not ND's job to 'usher in a renaissance of East Coast football' (a ridiculous statement considering Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Clemson, South Carolina, and God knows how many other top-notch football programs are East Coast teams). ND, like every other university, is beholden to no one but its alumni, donors, etc. And those people have/had no interest in joining the Big East in football. That league has no one to blame but itself for allowing its basketball schools to keep them from eating the ACC when the option existed.

I remember hearing that at the time, and wondering why all those Eastern schools were so reluctant to form a conference when they were a quasi-conference that all played each other anyway. Then after PSU told them to FOAD they went ahead and formed a conference anyway. Obviously some poor decision-making in the East 20 years ago.PurdueSTL wrote:This is an interesting point...if you believe old-time Penn State folks, they say that throughout the 1970s and 80s, Paterno came with his hat in hand to Pitt, WVU, Syracuse, BC, et.al. with the idea of forming an East Coast football conference, under which these schools could consolidate their bargaining power as a region...the story goes that Paterno was told by the others --in no uncertain terms-- to go pound sand, apparently because the others feared they'd merely be fodder for Penn State's quest for dominance...Vidor wrote:It's a pity what happened to the Big East.
