Yes, there is a whole spectrum of ways people cope with a tragedy. Hopefully, every last person involved is of the "maintaining a routine to cope" variety, because that's what they got.

Roger Goodell is an ass hole, but I'm not going to condemn him for allowing the Chiefs to play especially if they wanted to. And, counter to your point is the obvious other side of the coin that if the game is cancelled, those that want to keep a routine wouldn't ahve been allowed to and thereby punished further.

It's a no win situation, imo. You're damned if you play and you're damned if you cancel the game.

The most troubling to me is that some KC players thought it was a good idea to "pay tribute" to Belcher. The guy shot her 9 times, for crying out loud. To me, that is a little sickening.

To me it looks like at least some of them have things in perspective and also wanted to play. Crennel talks at the beginning and I at least find it believable that the best thing for him to do was go through with the game. I do wonder if anyone could have sat out if they chose, without getting crap about it.

At least playing the game you can put it out of your mind a little bit for a few hours instead of stuck there sitting and dwelling on things.

goodell is in the new time magazine and talks about the incident.

On Dec. 1, when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was told by the league’s head of security that Jovan Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, murdered his girlfriend and then shot himself in the Kansas City Chiefs parking lot in front of his coach and general manager, he remembers his disbelief. ”My first thoughts weren’t about football at all,” Goodell told TIME in his first public comments since the shocking incident. “This is not a football tragedy. It’s a human tragedy that impacts families, loved ones and an innocent child left behind.” Would the Chiefs play their game against the Carolina Panthers the next day? “It was ultimately my decision,” he says. “But it was important to get the views of the players and honor their wishes. [Chiefs chairman] Clark [Hunt] got back to me and said [Coach] Romeo [Crennel] and the captains felt that playing the game–being together as a team and a community — was important. So that’s exactly what we did.” The Chiefs beat the Carolina Panthers 27-21.
