He didn't feel he was getting respect in Wisconsin. I wonder if that means the same kind of respect Pujols didn't get. Likely.
Alvarez told him his job was in danger if he didn't start winning close games. Sounds made up.
Really, there's not an obvious reason that jumps out. I'd say the respect thing may be a pretty big one. Alvarez still is more of a household name than Bielema even after 3 rose bowls.....a lot of Wisconsin fans are sending tweets (obviously the best way to judge fan reaction ;) ) to Arkansas mediatypes saying take him, he's only had success on Alvarez's coattails.... Winning the SEC (which let's be honest, every coach believes they can win wherever they are*) elevates him to a household name. *I don't think Beilema is thinking, hmmmm....if I can go 10-2 in the B1G, that is 8-4 in the SEC....or whatever. I would imagine he's thinking he can win the SEC. At least I'd hope or he is the wrong coach for not only Arkansas, but any school anywhere.

Here's why the hire makes sense for Arkansas:
He is a guy that can identify the recruits he wants and get them to a program that isn't exactly on everyone's radar. That's key for places like Arkansas.
His game plan is essentially the same as other SEC powerhouses. Run and defend. If you can't beat em, join em, I guess.
He's a proven winner. Say what you will, but 3 BCS games in 7 years has to be as many as any other coach sans Saban has.

As with all things time will tell. At first I hated the hire, partly because (maybe only because) of SIF's dislike for him. The more I think about it, the better I like it for Arkansas. I really don't get why he did it unless the money is that much more and he felt di$re$pected at Wisconsin.
I think that's a really good summary of it all, especially the part about thinking he can succeed in the SEC, which would elevate his profile. "I keep going 10-2 in the Big Ten. WHEN (not if) I do that in the SEC, I get more money and a better reputation".

Justified or not, Badger fans almost universally dislike the guy. I think at least part of that is that he's known all around Madison as a gigantic choad. Madison's a great college football town and if they think you're "one of them", they'll embrace the hell out of you. But if they feel like you've done them wrong, they'll shun the [expletive] out of you. And I think that's Burt Berlama in a nutshell in Madison.

I tend to think that the Wisconsin brand is being undersold a bit, too, in the interest of bumping Bielema's reputation. Madison is just 2.5 hours away from Chicago, the Badgers built their 20-year run by poaching St. Louis (long before Bielema was in Madison), the state loves the [expletive] out of football (it's part of the culture; just not as much as Pennsylvania/Ohio/Texas/SEC states), and Wisconsin/Minnesota/Northern Iowa has no shortage of huge fat offensive linemen to build up a killer NCAA running game. The program has also developed a reputation over a very long period of being capable of developing top-shelf NFL quality linemen. It's kind of "Offensive Tackle University". There are plenty of tactical tools there to build a winner and Bielema didn't have to travel to Siberia to find talent to make it happen.

Not that I think he was a bad hire for Arkansas. I don't know that he can compete for SEC titles (let alone national titles) but I could easily see him winning 7-9 games every year and going to lots of decent non-BCS bowls.

Haha... that's the nutty lady who sang "United We Stand" while talking about how they were gonna whoop 'Bama by 100 points, right?

Yes. She also sang a song to Lattimore after his injury. And a lot of others. A local newslady dressed up like her for halloween...it's a sad world.

I'm on board with the analyses by AW and JL- and for signthief and pioneer, 68 wins in 7 years isn't that hard when most of them were against Wofford, San Jose St, Minnesota, Indiana etc. He was 1-5 against tOSU and 2-4 in bowls.

To expound a little further on that, slide, I saw this stat this morning:
Not that Buckeye fans needed to fear Bielema – he was just 16-18 against Big Ten teams not named the Gophers, Boilers, Illini, or Hoosiers.

Agreed about all the previous stuff. Wisconsin has a great brand....which is why it is all the more unbelievable why this happened.

But, to address this last point a little more. I'd expect the same thing as you. I wouldn't expect him to win the SEC West in the next 5 years. I think a lot of Arkansas fans feel the same way I do. He wasn't a 'Holy [expletive]! We just got Gary Patterson or Jon Gruden or (insert sexy name here)!!!!!!!!!!!!' hire that a lot of people wanted.

In Jeff Long's defense, however, his hands were kind of tied on this one. He fired Bobby Petrino who had taken Arkansas to a couple top 10 finishes in a row, the Sugar Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. People were ecstatic during Petrino's tenure. There was an overall optimism, sense of pride and happiness with the program. They are in the midst of ma$$ive renovations (brought on by Petrino's success) to the training facilities and stadium (I think north of $50M) funded by ongoing fundraising. Then they tanked this year.

They became a $100 million dollar sailbaot without a keel. Long had to bring in someone proven to not only steady the ship but also enable him to continue selling tickets and bring in donations for the renovations or face a real crisis. He didn't really have the option of bringing in an unproven Gus Malzahn or Kirby Smart or Sonny [expletive]. To an extent, I think even Charlie Strong would have been too big of a gamble.

Bielema is that; he's your keel. He doesn't have to win national championships or the SEC or even the West to sell tickets and get financing for the renovations. He has to to what he does. Field a competitive team that can stay in games, win some of them, and not get run over. Simple.

3.2M/year for 6 years for Bielema. Lots of incentives, but I imagine that's normal.

If it was so easy why has no one done it at Wisconsin since Phil freakin' King? And, yes, I understand Alvarez set him up fairly well (although that point is wildly overrated, Wisconsin was not particularly good in Barry's last 5 seasons).

I would be willing to bet a lot of money that the next guy in doesn't win 68 games in his first 7 seasons. And the next guy is set up way better than Bielema was talent-wise. Wisconsin has 7 seniors this year.

To me, it's a classic case of be careful what you wish for.

Was/is he a gigantic choad? Maybe. I don't care whatsoever. I'm an alum and a booster in that I donate every year and have season tickets in football and basketball, and I couldn't possibly care less. As long as he's not doing anything illegal (never did), not having serious problems with his players being idiots (very rarely did), and wins without cheating, I mean....what more do you want?

I would be happy with Chris Petersen as a replacement, and I know that's not going to happen. So I'm pissed.
