she was paralyzed from Friday until Monday. Couldn't walk, eat. Last action was going to bushes and laying down to die. But her eyes were wide open.

We picked her up, brought her inside and created a "dying area" for her. With all her toys, treats, leash....and lots of her favorite foods.

Bf played dog songs (mostly Byrds) on his guitar to her for hours, trying to get her to reconnect with life.

So Monday night, she gets up (STANDS UP after not being able to move at all) and eats the bland dish I had near her head. But collapses after.

Since then, incremental improvement, which makes me think she was stung by a bug or spider or something and this has nothing to do with her cancer.

edit, thanks ky and all for caring.

Impressive. And kudos to the parents for realizing something was off. I don't know that I would've had such suspicions - I would've figured my dog was just being weird.

Keep us posted doc. Some of us have adopted Maggie via the internet; especially since you posted her picture.

Wow, that's crazy. I hope she continues to improve as much as possible considering her diagnosis.

So this morning I let my dog Oscar out the back for him to do his business, like I do every day. While he's going, he spots a random white cat that was walking around my backyard. Naturally, he barks and bolts after the damn cat, towards the front yard and my heavily trafficked rural highway. He gets across the street to the neighbor's yard, and turns around and starts walking back to me looking all super triumphant and proud that he scared off this vicious predator, all the while I'm pleading for him to stop moving as I see cars coming past. Didn't succeed. Was hit by a speeding SUV doing about 20 mph over the posted 40 mph speed limit.

Driver eventually stopped about 200 yards past, then turned around to ask me: 1) if the dog was mine, and 2) if he was dead. Then he turned and drove off. I managed to get the car driving right behind him to slam on his brakes, as I ran into the street and picked him up and ran him into my driveway. He was alive, but obviously in extreme pain. I could immediately see he had at least a broken front leg, but couldn't see anything else. Bleeding from a few spots.

I threw a couple towels into the backseat of my Forester, and drove him to the vet, all the while calling the vet to make sure someone was there. It was only 6:15am, but I was hoping someone was already in. If not, I'd get the emergency 24 hr on-call person. Someone answered, who had literally just walked in the door, but she admitted him and gave him some sedative meds to hold him off until the actual doctors got in to get him x-rays and blood work.

Final prognosis was a badly broken front leg, looks like it was an open fracture so they can't put a cast on it for risk of infection. It will likely require a plate and surgery by an orthopedic surgeon rather than just the vet. So the x-rays were e-mailed to the animal hospital down in Syracuse who would do the surgery, and they got me in for tomorrow morning for my consultation. Surgery will follow Wednesday morning.

I've been damn near hysterical most of the morning. Final prognosis came back sucky, but it could have been a lot worse. If he had even been 6" farther out into the street, with how fast that [expletive] driver was going, he would have been dead instantly. God damnit people - watch where your [expletive] surroundings when you're driving!

Oh swirls, that had to be awful to watch happen. So is your dog out from sedatives now, back home with you until his consult tomorrow, or still at the vet? Is it only his leg and nothing internal? Best of luck with everything tomorrow. I hope his prognosis is manageable and he lives a long and happy life.
