Re: Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare)
So, the argument is that the premiums going up are going up because the coverage is better?
Sounds okay, I guess, I just don't understand, as usual, why it's the middle class that is having to pay more for 'better' protection against catastrophe.
Also, do people really spend more than $100/month on car insurance? That blows my mind.

I did in StL, because my zip code had one of the highest car theft rates in the country.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Also, do people really spend more than $100/month on car insurance? That blows my mind.
$98 a month for health insurance for a private plan seems insanely cheap. I bet they were perfectly satisfied with their insurance, as long as they never had to use it. Maybe it is wrong to force them to buy coverage that has better minimum coverage. But at the same time, from a meta perspective, I can't fault the government for raising the bar on the minimum requirements.

How much do you pay? I'm pretty close to $100/mo to insure a new but cheap car. At least according to this list, most people are paying more than $100/mo.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Also, do people really spend more than $100/month on car insurance? That blows my mind.

I'm definitely not an expert on any of this stuff, I just suspect that a lot of these people who are seeing big jumps in their premium were really no different than uninsured people before. If anything major happened they were going to end up either treated for free or bankrupt like anyone else.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:So, the argument is that the premiums going up are going up because the coverage is better?

I don't know that the middle class is specifically getting screwed. Younger people are kind of getting the shaft because of the caps on how much older people can be charged.
I paid over $100 a month car insurance with a four year old vehicle and clean driving record in Las Vegas because the accident rate there is sky high. Now a one year old vehicle in KC costs me about $60.

I pay $20/month (for liability only) to insure a 1994 Toyota Camry.Arthur Dent wrote:How much do you pay? I'm pretty close to $100/mo to insure a new but cheap car. I paid $22/month to insure a boat. I paid $43/month or so to insure a Hyundai Elantra that was less than 10 years old and less than $25 for liability on a chevy Silverado. At one point I also had an $8/month renters insurance. So, I had renters insurance, liability on a truck, full coverage on a car, and full coverage on a boat for $98/month at it's peak. Now I'm just under $20.

It may not be the middle class, in particular, getting screwed (if that is even the right word). It's just that if you take a thousand or so from someone making $55k a year before taxes vs a thousand or so from someone making $100k a year.....it hurts one person more than the other. Obviously.cardsfansince82 wrote:I'm definitely not an expert on any of this stuff, I just suspect that a lot of these people who are seeing big jumps in their premium were really no different than uninsured people before. It feels like the popular trend anymore is to deflect almost all costs to the middle class. Democrats in my mind stand up for the poor and the republicans stand up for the rich.

My wife and I pay $105 combined for full coverage on 2 new vehicles (1 truck and 1 car).Arthur Dent wrote:How much do you pay? I'm pretty close to $100/mo to insure a new but cheap car. I've never paid more than $75 for one car for full coverage, even in my teens/early 20s.
Ya gotta shop around.

I'm sure Arthur Dent shops around plenty. Where you live has way more impact on what you pay than your bargain hunting skills.cardsfantx wrote:My wife and I pay $105 combined for full coverage on 2 new vehicles (1 truck and 1 car).Arthur Dent wrote:How much do you pay? We're both in Texas, I believe...AD in Austin, and DFW myself.cardsfansince82 wrote:I'm sure Arthur Dent shops around plenty. I highly doubt there's much difference between the 2. If anything, I'd be willing to bet DFW would be the higher of the locations.
