They also advertise that you can get ABC and ESPN on it, but I'm wondering about blackout restrictions on those channels, and others.
I've got it. It's really a big bucket of meh, but it only costs $35, so it's probably worth it. Here's what it allows you to do, put most things that you can get on your phone or laptop via the internet on your TV.

Probably the vast majority of the time I'm using it to cast youtube from my phone to the TV so little AW can dance and in general be mesmerized in the morning while the Mrs. and I get ready for work.

Any reason to rent wifi router- and pay activation fee- from Charter instead of buy my own? Compatibility issues?

No, Charter works fine with your own router.

HBO to Launch Standalone Streaming Service

HBO is finally giving the cord-cutters what they want.

Speaking at Time Warner Inc. investor day meeting on Wednesday, Richard Plepler, the chief executive of HBO, announced that the pay-TV channel would launch a standalone, online streaming version of its service next year. He said the service is aimed at the 10 million people in the U.S. who subscribe to broadband, but don’t watch television.

“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped,” he said. “It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. So, in 2015, we will launch a standalone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States.”

Nice. How long until all networks do this?
I'd buy a HBO, ESPN, Fox Sports, AMC, and FX package and be fine. Those are the 5 channels I watch of the 400 I pay $120 a month for...

I'm surprised they're doing it so soon. Will be interesting to see how they handle the business end of it. Some of the barrier is that HBO has never had to handle transactions, customer service, etc. Now they'll have to pay for all that. You could end up paying close to your cable bill for only a half dozen channels. I'm still more inclined to that model, since the money goes right into the programming I like instead of a middle man and a bunch of networks I couldn't care less about.

I'm at $30/month right now with Netflix (which I need to downgrade) and Hulu (which I probably need to drop), and I think the cable subscription I have to allow me to get HBO and OnDemand runs about $40-50, not counting what I pay for internet.

it'll be at least $15 per month. I believe that is what we pay for it right now with cable. So they're not going to lose $ on the deal.

If they charged $10, then all cable people would cancel their $15 a month, and go to $10, thus losing $5 per month.

It'll prob only be a good deal for people who ONLY want HBO. If you're wanting like 7-10 channels, and want the channels to go to stand alone/streaming service...you'll pay the same amount/more. Might as well keep cable and the 400+ channels in case you ever end up needing them.

ala carte channels will never work for a lot of people, as it will prob end up costing more per month (unless of course, you only want 1 or 2 channels)
