Rant: Football on sports radio

Post by MrSaigon »

Don't hardly give a damn about the NFL. College football is fun to watch--lots of energy, anything can happen. But I don't care to talk about either much at all. Or listen.

But sports content is just so jam-packed with football. I don't know if it's people defending their billion dollar investments in football rights or what, but I'm lucky to get 10 minutes of Blazers coverage from anyone on a local sports radio show. Otherwise it's football, football, football. And this is an NBA-only town. Even in the offseason: football, football, football. I'm not sure baseball has been discussed in Portland on the radio since the 90s. I won't be surprised if they cut into a Blazers game in the next couple weeks to report that Tony Romo has been upgraded from doubtful to questionable in a bye week.

There are podcasts and stuff, but sometimes you're in the car and want to flip through the channels, or want some sports background noise on television and it's all football, football, football.

I know football is wildly popular, but I can't believe this is a true reflection of the market's desires. Maybe it is.
