Small sample size I know - but I have to give United bigtime kudos for getting us out of Chicago on Monday after that storm. Our original flight for 8:45 was cancelled, they created a new flight just for that day scheduled to leave at 11:15. We got out at 11:45 - so 3 hours late the morning after the 5th biggest winter storm in the history of Chicago, can't complain.

Also, on Sunday when we found our flight was cancelled I called Orbitz (who we booked through) to try to get re-booked. Somehow I thought they might have a direct line to United or something, but I was wrong. Almost 2 hours on hold, every 30 minutes or so they would come back and say they were still waiting on United. My wife decided to call, was on hold maybe 5 minutes, and bingo we were booked on that flight I mentioned above.

This....mother f'ers lost our luggage for 4 damn days on a trip the the Virgin Islands and wouldn't give us a single thing for the inconvienence.

And for those who have never been to the Virgin Islands, let's just say there's no a damn place on the entire island to buy things you need. Well, there's a K-Mart...kinda. I say that because I've never quite seen a store in such bad shape in my life. The shelves were literally empty, and what they did have cost 2 to 3 times what items should cost.

God damn, that vacation was a nightmare.

Wait, what do you need other than a bathing suit, toothbrush, and sunscreen?

I haven't checked in luggage since I can remember, partly for that very reason (the other is saving 15 minutes waiting for your luggage - I want to go!). My wife and I travel very light. The only thing I don't under pack on is underwear.

I hate people who carry on luggage...the same amount of time (or more) is wasted getting through security, looking for a place in the overhead compartment, heaving your 70lb bag up there...then after landing, trying to find it while everyone is standing on each other's dicks, struggling to get it out of the overhead compartment, trying to find the button to extend the handle, and then getting it stuck on 5 seats trying to de-plane.

Most of the time, my luggage is waiting for me on the carousel due to all the "time-saving" carry-on folks.

You aren't saving any time whatsoever...but I'm sure it feels like it.

I get your point, but I still like to where clean clothes when my wife & I go out to dinner. And since you're married, I assume your wife travels with make-up and all that other stuff they need to get ready.

Jim, how does your wife get around security if she doesn't check all that stuff since there's no possible way to get that kind of stuff through security in your carry on luggage?

We've definitely learned our lesson. We make sure to at least pack a change or two of clothes & some other necessaries in our carry on now, but it's impossible (at least for us) to carry everything you need for a week long vacation in there.

What do you mean all of that stuff? Like KY Jelly? Travel sizes.

We did have to throw out a bottle of sunscreen on the way there.
