This may be a repost but I'm still floored by it. The top 25 people in the hedge fund industry made $11.6 billion in 2014. So it was a really disappointing year. In 2013, the same group made $21 billion.

All for an industry that really doesn't provide anything tangible to the overall economy.

In 09 I was accepted to a MA Education/credential program at PSU, but nationwide (I was told to go to Texas or Alaska) everyone was laying off teachers and old teachers were abstaining from retirement because Wall Street pissed all their money away. So I withdrew. The teacher job market isn't any good in Portland now either, and I've moved on, but:

recent Teacher survey in my family:
One family member retired, one will bide time for 6-10 years more until retirement, other one is considering leaving a profession he once was passionate about.
political sabotage of public education has been effective.

Obstructionist, union-busting GOP [expletive] are ruining the education system on purpose. They know educated, free-thinking, working class young people won't vote conservative. This should be considered criminal if not treasonous.Freed Roger wrote:recent Teacher survey in my family:

Dow's down 4% this week. Chinese economy slowing, huge glut of oil, possible interest rate hikes coming.

China is a hot mess right now. I haven't seen enough to intelligently comment on it, but I'll just say it is typically a bad idea for governments to try to control a market. They can influence it, sure, but when they start prohibiting the sale of stocks or trying to purchase them to prop up the price, that's not good. And, it doesn't instill much confidence.heyzeus wrote:Dow's down 4% this week. Chinese economy slowing, huge glut of oil, possible interest rate hikes coming.
Further, their growth is slowing and from what I've seen, they've spent a bunch of money on infrastructure, housing, cities, etc that isn't being used. Like thousands of condos and apartments built for no one. It's kind of like what American developers did with houses, except it's the Chinese govt that provided the glut.
Then there's the entire devaluing the yuan thing.

It seems like we are due for a bit of a crash. I mean we've really fixed none of our problems. I hope not as I really have enjoyed watching my funds grow but we're do. The farm economy is crashing and burning as we speak, food prices are going to go up, etc.
