Cardinals need to hire someone who can recognize the precise moment one of the game's best relievers stops being a major league pitcher. The dividing line is very clear to the trained eye. If this person can do this by watching television, that'd be great. Another requirement for the new manager: He can NEVER stick with a player while he struggles. He MUST remove each one instantly. Because EVERYONE knows no player has ever made an adjustment during a poor performance. Most important: Nothing bad can EVER happen on this new manager's watch. He should know to prevent ALL bad things BEFORE they happen, preferably using 20/20 message board hindsight. It's a tricky job. Please apply within.

He still has poor bullpen management regardless of the record. Matheny's bullpen management is obviously terrible. That's why a team that scores fewer than four runs per game has 98 wins. That's also why a team with a plus-16 run differential won 90 last season. Cards manager just can't make the right decisions to win close games.

That's the thing. No one wants him fired. I don't understand why people on this board think that if someone is being critical of a managerial decision that it translates into wanting Matheny fired. Back to bullpen management: Cardinals are third in bullpen ERA at 2.77, are 75-4 when leading after eight and 86-1 when leading after nine. And this team doesn't have great relievers outside of Rosenthal and Siegrist. You'd think having a tactically inept manager would show up in the numbers somewhere.
