Matheny is about as obvious a MOY selection as one could have given the vagaries of the job. There's no precedent for what the Cardinals have achieved. Teams ranked in the bottom 20 percent in scoring don't win 100 games. And that's not factoring injuries, youth, the death of Oscar Taveras and playing in the best division in baseball.

Of course, sports writers spent a few weeks trying to find an MVP that wasn't Bryce Harper. They like to make obvious decisions difficult.

We can take Hurdle out of the discussion. He sent his closer into a tie game in the 9th, and he didn't have anyone up and warming after the first 10 pitches or so when he got in trouble.
