Enrique Rios, a 26-year-old Los Angeles transplant, lives with his fiancée and small dog in a 250-square-foot "micro-unit" apartment in Northwest Portland. It is the size of a college dorm room with space for a bed, a toilet and not much else. He cooks meals in a communal kitchen shared with other tenants.

Rios pays $995 a month.

I try not to judge people too harshly, but I hope on his way home today, he stops at his favorite food cart and realizes he forgot his wallet at home. And then he gets home and he finds it only after two hours and cancelling all his cards.

It's interesting to see Black Lives Matters signs in front of people's homes. Because Black Homes don't seem to. And this is a city with serious diversity problems before we dump all the minorities somewhere over the Cascades or in Southern Washington.

I didn't read the whole thing, but I sure hope at some point this poor, starving artist who has to leave town realizes the irony that she came here in the first Great Portland Migration of the 90s.

She is the artist of her own destruction.

Gentrifiers and especially artistic community leaders create attractive spaces for young professionals to live who then price the artists out.

I feel sorry for people like this, but there are still many great places to live that are more affordable than places like Portland. People give the city I live in a lot of [expletive]. I agree with a lot of it. Phoenix is a giant suburb with no greenery and political nut jobs running the show. But there is plenty of cool stuff, cool people and cool ways to live your life. I'm not saying it's the best place to live, I'm just saying that any place is what you make of it and you don't have to live in one of 6 trendy places to be cool or make art. I applaud her for being open minded enough to go to San Antionio, a place I would hesitate to ever consider.

Boise, Spokane, Tucson, Missoula, Flagstaff, Nashville, New Orleans, Reno; these are some cool ass towns I've been to that are cheap and plenty hip with some available gigs. Go somewhere that doesn't get shouted out in typical hipster culture and enjoy your low mortgage payment.

The problem with this is simultaneously complaining about high prices and new building. In Austin, opposition to new building (because character) as well as new infrastructure has been a disaster. The city is a nice place to live, so people want to move here. This is a good thing, but growth requires building. All the opposition to growth has not prevented it; it's just caused skyrocketing housing costs, out of control sprawl, and all the crap that comes with this. Long past time to take our heads out of the sand on growth.

The real issue with Phoenix- and LV for that matter- is it is a terrible place to have a huge city.
