Non-Consecutive Days Off

My normal work schedule would have me off Monday and Tuesday. Because of college football on our station Saturday nights, I've had my schedule adjusted something like 6 of the past 9 weeks, to where my days off are Monday and Saturday.

I think what bothers me the most is work thinking they're doing me a favor by giving me a Saturday off. "I bet it feels good getting a weekend off!" Ummm... if it was a whole weekend, sure. I'd rather have any two days off consecutively than a Saturday and another off day that isn't Friday or Sunday.

And don't get me started on the whole worthlessness of off Saturday, on Sunday, off Monday...

I think one of the biggest issues today is workplaces screwing with peoples schedules. Two days off in a row should be a must. I could never work for a place that had me rotating shifts, not knowing when my days off would be, and not having consecutive days off. I don't mind working hard and usually during harvest I work 50-60 days in a row but one day off just doesn't do it. It's just enough time to do all the crap you need to do around the house and not relax.

Rotating shifts isn't so much an issue, and I really understand why you wouldn't have me work Saturday if there's no newscast to do. But... why not go Friday-Saturday then? I've got comp time built up too... why not just ask me if I'd like to use one of my days then?

Honestly, more times than not, I think I would rather just work six of seven and earn a comp day than to have these non-consecutive days. It's not like I'm really enjoying my time off anyways.

Consecutive days off midweek is kicking for me. It is the best.
Though now have the Thursday Blues. Poor me

We have a flex schedule where we work 9 hours Mon-Thurs (well "work" is stretching it), and we alternate Friday's between 8 hours and the day off. So 9+9+9+9+8 and then 9+9+9+9+0.

Tomorrow is my 0. My flex Friday. My 3 day weekend, which I get every other week. In the summer not only did I take my 2 full weeks together in August, but every Friday I was scheduled for the 8 hour day I took a vacation day. So 4 day weeks all summer, plus 2 weeks off. Going to up the ante next summer to 3 weeks off. A week in June, and then 2 around Labor Day.

I will say the downside of all of this is I can hardly tolerate a 5 day work week. It's an absolute killer.

That's what we call "nuclear nines" or "eight nines and an eight" and we had them at my plant in South Carolina. In New York and now in Minnesota I'm back to straight eight hour days. Except now I'm an hourly employee and get paid for all my overtime hours, so I'm actually getting paid for the 45-50 hours per week I normally work instead of just the base 40.

I don't mind odd days off - I'm used to it when we have our annual maintenance outages. I love working night shift. The only thing is, when I'm on nights, I don't like having days off. We work six 12's on both days and nights during outages, and having one day off per week when you're on nights is worthless, other than spending the entire night out drinking at a bar. Normally I request to work all seven days instead.
