My guess would be the best doctors simply wouldn't participate in the system, stay private, and charge what they want.Schlich wrote:this might be a dumb/easily googlable question, but who determines who gets access to the best doctors under a single payer system? I am assuming private practices will not just be able to charge whatever they want. Does the govt determine how much they get paid? Would all doctors in a certain field all be paid the same way? Do we think all of the 'good doctors' are going to leave Colorado on the slim chance that Colorado Care gets passed next year?

But nobody would pay for services that weren't covered under single payer.
Then again, I guess it isn't the doctors that are getting away with murder here when it comes to healthcare costs

No it isnt. The docs i know (BIL and a couple of personal acquaintences) are just as fed up with the status quo as many of us.Schlich wrote:But nobody would pay for services that weren't covered under single payer.

I'll never understand why more employers don't favor single payer. Health care costs are burden to a lot of employers, and their fastest growing expense in a lot of cases. Single payer would essentially be all employers banding together in the same pool to increase scale and reduce costs.

Employer provided health insurance gives employers more power over their employees.pioneer98 wrote:I'll never understand why more employers don't favor single payer. That's what I come back to as well. They [expletive] and complain and talk about what a burden it is for them. Then get rid of it. But if they do that, it gives their employees more freedom of movement.Arthur Dent wrote:Employer provided health insurance gives employers more power over their employees.pioneer98 wrote:I'll never understand why more employers don't favor single payer. This seems like a good place to ask this question.
My family gets our health insurance through her job. She switched jobs, and insurance, this year and there was a 10 or 14 day period where we were uninsured.
Are we going to have a pay a penalty on our taxes? If so, any idea how much?

20. If I change health coverage during the year and end up with a gap when I am not covered, will I owe a payment?
Individuals are treated as having minimum essential coverage for a calendar month if they have coverage for at least one day during that month. Additionally, as long as the gap in coverage is less than three months, you may qualify for an exemption and not owe a payment. See question 22 for more information on the exemption for a short coverage gap.
22. What qualifies as a short coverage gap?
In general, a gap in coverage that lasts less than three months qualifies as a short coverage gap. If an individual has more than one short coverage gap during a year, the short coverage gap exemption only applies to the first gap.
