Rant: lost wedding ring

Post by Arthur Dent »

Last night, I noticed my finger felt funny and realized my wedding ring was missing. Searched the house, car, my cube at work. Probably go through the garbage this evening. May have fallen off when I was in the yard due to the cold, but if so, it's probably hopeless to find. Only made it six month before losing the thing. Feel like [expletive].

No joke: I lost mine 3 days after my wedding.

I'm no good at wearing jewelry. My wife didn't really care so I didn't even bother to replace the ring.

Anyway, if you want another one I'd get an inexpensive tungsten ring. You can find great deals on slickdeals.net pretty regularly. Here's an example deal.

Also, chill out. It's just a ring.

A buddy of mine and his wife skipped the rings and opted for tattoos of the other's name on the ring finger instead.

Maybe not. I lost a gold hoop earring. 3 years later, found it while raking leaves in the back yard. Probably fell out 3 years prior which was the last time I was raking leaves

I've not lost my original wedding ring, but like you I never really wear it. Maybe 2 or 3 times a month. I like wearing watches, but rings feel weird to wear so I don't like wearing it. My wife doesn't care.

I get that they are symbols, and that symbol is more important to some than others. But yeah, it is just a ring.

I lost mine scraping ice off my car about a year after I was married, didn't realize it until I was back inside. Combed the parking lot for a few days after but it was hopeless. Replaced it with the exact same ring($50 from Penneys) and outside of some momentary 'we don't have the ring that was put on my finger that day' sadness, no big deal. I let the lady at Penneys talk me into a slightly smaller size on the replacement though, a decision I regret to this day.

When my son was really young (maybe two), he picked up my wedding ring off the dresser when I was visiting my in-laws in Chicago, and then he hid it and couldn't remember where he put it. So, I had to do without it for two or three months.

Then, one day, my mother-in-law was vacuuming in the far corner of a room with a thick shag carpet, and CLUNK, she heard something loud and metallic get sucked up into the machine. She immediately suspected that it was the ring, cut the vacuum bag open, and there it was. Bent into an oval, mind you.

I was tossing trash in to the massive compactor at work about a month after marrying my first wife and the ring flew off in to the compactor. The wife was never sure if I was telling the truth about where I lost the ring. Never saw it again. Got a replacement ring and got divorced a year later.

My first ring of my current marriage got lost in the wash, I had taken it off to make hamburger patties and had put it in my pocket. Got me a nice tungsten and gold ring, and while horsing around with my brother, it flew off my finger and shattered on the granite counter top, the jewelry store actually gave me credit on it and I replaced it with a regular tungsten ring with a few diamonds in it. Had a repairman out last year to fix the washing machine, and he found the original ring in a drain trap deep inside the machine. So now I have 2 rings, the original and the one I wear most of the time, the tungsten.

Don't sweat it AD. You and every other guy on the planet has now lost a wedding ring. I've lost several. The one I'm wearing now I paid $20 for at one of those outdoor summer arts and crafts fairs. My wife knew the deal with me going in - I lose stuff. That's just the price of being me.

You lose that first one and it's like a little ding on a new car. At first you cringe, but then you realize it's better just to get it out of the way. Now you can relax.
