We are getting about 1-2" of snow here, the timing couldn't have been worse. I have a pretty simple and relatively short commute, I'll bet I saw 20 cars involved in accidents or in a ditch. Winter sucks.

My dad and his girlfriend lost the battle at their house last night. The sand bags couldn't hold the water back and when they finally gave up and left the basement was already half filled and filling fast.

They think they were able to get everything they couldn't get out up high enough that it should stay dry but who knows. The last time I talked to him was this morning when he was on his way to try and get out as much as possible since they can still get in through the back thanks to the hill and deck off of the back of the house.

The worst part is that I don't think they have flood insurance. When they bought the house, it had been foreclosed on after being damaged in the last big flood (not sure what year) and while they got it really cheap (like $30k), they also had to completely gut it and remodel the entire place. Since my dad and his friends did all of the work themselves, it isn't even as much the money as how much actual work they put into that place only to have it possibly destroyed again because they just weren't good enough with the sand bags.

I saw something new the other day - some kids were outside shoveling the snow off of their front lawns to make a hockey rink. I'm sure the yard would be skate-able. We had alot of rain (nothing like Missouri and Central/So Ill) and then it froze and then it snowed. It was weird seeing a perfectly shaped rink in someones front lawn. They were about done with it when I saw, if I had time I would have gone back to see the game.

My bro in law has made a rink in his yard for his hockey kids, fpr several winters.. It is big time-side boards, tarp underlay, ligjts. They were griping about the warm weather, until recently. He says he knows a guy that has some sort of zamboni.

I've seen people do this in back yards where they actually had it setup, but this was mostly a mother nature made deal where they just shoveled the snow off the layer of ice on the front lawn.
